Separate joint rotation from the displacement of a limb endpoint

Joints connect skeletal elements. Fibrous joints join through fibrous connective tissue, cartilaginous joints through cartilage, and synovial joints have a joint cavity with articular surfaces, capsule and synovial fluid. Structural classification is not identical to a single mobility number. Ligaments connect and constrain bones; tendons transmit muscle force to attachments.

Learning outcome: Change proximal orientation with bend held fixed, then change bend with proximal orientation fixed. Compare endpoint coordinates with radial distance and explain why joint rotation is not the same quantity as endpoint displacement.

Starting recap

Connect integumentary and musculoskeletal structures to explicit material, geometric, activation and mechanical boundaries; separate anatomy from clinical and safe-loading claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At α=30° and β=90°, the endpoint is (3√3/2−1, 1.5+√3), approximately (1.5981,3.2321). Its distance is √13. Changing α while retaining β=90° rotates this endpoint without changing √13.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can the endpoint move while its distance from the proximal origin stays fixed?

Experiment

Change proximal orientation with bend held fixed, then change bend with proximal orientation fixed. Compare endpoint coordinates with radial distance and explain why joint rotation is not the same quantity as endpoint displacement.

Separate joint rotation from endpoint displacement

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original planar links length 3 and 2; distal absolute orientation is a+b. Endpoint x=3cos a+2cos(a+b), y=3sin a+2sin(a+b). The bend is a mathematical rotation, not a clinical range-of-motion definition or prescribed posture.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Changing overall orientation and changing joint bend have different geometric effects.

At fixed bend the endpoint distance from the origin stays fixed while its direction rotates. Synovial hinge and ball-and-socket structures permit different degrees of freedom; a two-dimensional link is not a complete joint model.

Understand

1. Identify the structure and functional question

2. Connect architecture, mechanism and assumptions

Synovial surfaces have articular cartilage and a lubricated interface. Hinge, pivot, plane, condyloid, saddle and ball-and-socket arrangements permit different movement patterns. A hinge-like two-dimensional rotation is therefore a deliberate simplification, not a model of all joint motions. Flexion/extension, abduction/adduction and rotation require the appropriate plane and reference position.

The original two-link system uses lengths 3 and 2. The proximal segment angle is α from horizontal, and the distal segment has an additional bend β, so its absolute orientation is α+β. Endpoint x=3 cosα+2 cos(α+β) and y=3 sinα+2 sin(α+β). Its distance from the origin is sqrt(13+12 cosβ). Holding β fixed while rotating α changes direction but not that distance.

The mathematical bend is not a clinical joint-angle convention or recommended range of motion. Real joints translate, have three-dimensional geometry and passive/active constraints. The endpoint alone does not identify every internal angle, and observed movement does not uniquely identify the muscle forces producing it. No physical movement test is required.

3. Reconstruct the original worked case

At α=30° and β=90°, the endpoint is (3√3/2−1, 1.5+√3), approximately (1.5981,3.2321). Its distance is √13. Changing α while retaining β=90° rotates this endpoint without changing √13.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can the endpoint move while its distance from the proximal origin stays fixed?

Change proximal orientation with bend held fixed, then change bend with proximal orientation fixed. Compare endpoint coordinates with radial distance and explain why joint rotation is not the same quantity as endpoint displacement.

5. Transfer to a changed mechanism or boundary

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At α=0° and β=120°, find endpoint and distance.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

The endpoint is (2,√3), with distance √7. The distal segment is rotated 120° from horizontal; that is not a clinical elbow-angle measurement.

6. Retain a bounded functional explanation

Preserve first predictions, settings, complete quantities and an independent observation that could reject the explanation in the Anatomy and Physiology course workspace. Public feedback and invented models are not clinical evaluation, supervised specimen work or independently assessed reasoning. No physical exercise, temperature exposure, electrical stimulation, personal measurements or treatment is requested.

Supporting anatomical mechanism, checked 30 October 2026. Original teaching prose, numerical packets, schematic diagrams and exercises; no real physiological measurement or injury threshold is inferred.

Apply

At a fixed bend β=90°, which quantity stays constant as α changes?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At α=0° and β=120°, find endpoint and distance.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
