SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend a regional delivery budget before declaring systemic balance

An organ is not supplied merely because a whole-body total looks adequate. Arterial flow divides among parallel tissue beds, while venous return mixes after exchange. Epithelial, vascular, muscle and neural structures contribute different parts of this chain. A complete explanation identifies where material moves, where work or transport occurs and which signals regulate the pathway rather than treating the body as a single uniform container.

Learning outcome: Compare routing at fixed total flow, then total flow at fixed routing. Keep both local limits, flow-weighted return and the separate renal marker ledger. Find a case that meets all demands and explain which fixed assumptions prevent extrapolating it to a real person.

Starting recap

Defend complete compartment and mechanism evidence while preserving the distinction between authored practice and independent anatomical competence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At Q=8 and f=0.4, renal flow is 3.2 and other flow 4.8. Capacities are 16 and 24, so actual uptakes are 8 and 24 and unmet demand is 8, despite total capacity 40 equaling total demand 40. Venous contents are 7.5 and 5; the mixed content is 6. Uptake closes as 8×(10−6)=32. Marker filtration is 0.64, return 0.32 and excretion 0.32 marker units/time.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Sufficient total capacity does not guarantee that each compartment receives enough flow.

Mix returning contents using flow weights, not a simple mean. Oxygen-like uptake and marker excretion are separate currencies; changing routing affects both under these supplied assumptions but cannot diagnose renal function or justify altering circulation.

Understand

Integrate anatomical evidence

An organ is not supplied merely because a whole-body total looks adequate. Arterial flow divides among parallel tissue beds, while venous return mixes after exchange. Epithelial, vascular, muscle and neural structures contribute different parts of this chain. A complete explanation identifies where material moves, where work or transport occurs and which signals regulate the pathway rather than treating the body as a single uniform container.

The original two-compartment model supplies total flow Q and renal routing fraction f. Renal flow is Qf and other-tissue flow Q(1−f). Both receive arterial content 10 amount units per volume and may extract at most half. Their separate demands are 8 and 32 amount units per time. Uptake is the smaller of local demand and local capacity 5 times local flow. Unused capacity in one compartment is not automatically reassigned to the other.

Renal venous content is 10 minus renal uptake divided by renal flow, with the same relation for the other compartment. Returning content is flow-weighted. The identity Q(10−mixed venous content)=total actual uptake must close. A simple average of the two venous concentrations is generally wrong because their flows differ.

A separate freely filtered marker has plasma concentration 2 marker units per volume. The fictional filtration proxy is one tenth of renal flow; half its filtered amount is reabsorbed and none is secreted. Marker excretion is filtered minus returned amount. These marker units are not the oxygen-like amount units, and neither ledger can be added to the other. Actual kidney filtration and circulation include autoregulation and many mechanisms omitted here.

This controlled allocation study is not a simulated patient, exercise prescription or clinical intervention. Fixed demands, content, extraction ceilings and filtration fractions are declared assumptions, not normal ranges. A failure of a compartment boundary identifies a limitation of the supplied arrangement; it does not diagnose an organ or authorize changing blood flow.

Reconstruct the original packet

Predict, investigate and retain

Predict first: Can adequate total uptake capacity coexist with unmet demand in one parallel tissue bed?

Compare routing at fixed total flow, then total flow at fixed routing. Keep both local limits, flow-weighted return and the separate renal marker ledger. Find a case that meets all demands and explain which fixed assumptions prevent extrapolating it to a real person.

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use Q=8 and renal fraction 0.2. Find local flows, uptake, mixed venous content and marker excretion. Compare with fraction 0.6 at the same total flow.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

At 0.2, flows 1.6/6.4 exactly supply capacities 8/32, meeting both demands; both venous contents and their mixture are 5. Marker excretion is 0.16. At 0.6, flows 4.8/3.2 provide capacities 24/16 but uptake 8/16, leaving unmet demand 16. Mixed venous content 7 closes total uptake 24. Total capacity remains 40 in both cases; its distribution matters.

At Q=8 and renal fraction 0.4, why does the model retain unmet demand 8?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Use Q=8 and renal fraction 0.2. Find local flows, uptake, mixed venous content and marker excretion. Compare with fraction 0.6 at the same total flow.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
