Resolve gas diffusion across connected barriers

Gas exchange connects alveolar gas, a thin epithelial barrier, intervening material and capillary endothelium to blood. A partial-pressure difference drives diffusion of a gas; total gas pressure and a particular gas’s partial pressure must not be confused. The oxygen and carbon-dioxide gradients can point in opposite directions even though both gases cross the same anatomical interface.

Learning outcome: Compare area and thickness changes separately. Retain both resistances and drops, then name an independent ventilation or perfusion observation needed before interpreting whole-system transport.

Starting recap

Trace cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy, conserve pressure-flow and gas-content ledgers, and distinguish transport, storage, binding and feasible uptake under explicitly supplied nonclinical boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At thickness factor 2 and area 1, Rm=4 and Rb=2, giving J=2. Membrane and blood-side drops are8 and4. At thickness 1 and area 2, both resistances are1 and J=6; the total maintained difference remains12.

Open the experiment

Predict

Does doubling area have the same internal effect as halving only membrane thickness?

Resolve gas partial-pressure drops across serial barriers

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original fixed gas partial-pressure difference 12. Membrane resistance 2a/b and blood-side resistance 2/b; shared flux 12/(Rm+Rb). Understand

1. Trace the anatomical pathway

2. Define the mechanism and boundary

The original steady model represents membrane resistance as Rm=2t/A and blood-side resistance as Rb=2/A, where t and A are relative thickness and area factors. The maintained overall partial-pressure difference is 12. One shared transfer rate crosses the two serial barriers, so J=12/(Rm+Rb). The partial-pressure drops are JRm and JRb and must sum to 12.

Increasing exchange area reduces both resistances, whereas changing membrane thickness alters only the membrane term. This difference generates a discriminating prediction: the same total transfer can coexist with a different distribution of pressure drops if different structural factors changed. Resistance parameters are independently stipulated, not measured from the bundled tissue images.

This steady diffusion model omits changing ventilation, perfusion, oxygen binding and spatial heterogeneity. A respiratory system can be limited elsewhere even when one membrane resistance falls. No model coefficient is a measured diffusing capacity, and no personal respiratory challenge or clinical interpretation follows from its numerical output.

3. Reconstruct the original evidence

At thickness factor 2 and area 1, Rm=4 and Rb=2, giving J=2. Membrane and blood-side drops are8 and4. At thickness 1 and area 2, both resistances are1 and J=6; the total maintained difference remains12.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does doubling area have the same internal effect as halving only membrane thickness?

Compare area and thickness changes separately. Retain both resistances and drops, then name an independent ventilation or perfusion observation needed before interpreting whole-system transport.

5. Defend a changed transport case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

At thickness 3 and area 2, find both resistances, rate and drops.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

Rm=3 and Rb=1, so rate 3 and drops9/3. The larger membrane share of the pressure drop reflects the specified resistance distribution, not a direct diagnosis of tissue change.

6. Preserve a bounded explanation

Retain your first prediction, full units and conservation checks, an alternative mechanism and a discriminating observation in the Anatomy course workspace. These invented data are not individual physiological values. Do not perform breath-holding, forced breathing, exercise challenges, blood sampling or personal measurements. Public answer exposure does not establish independent learner or practical competence.

Supporting anatomical mechanism, checked 30 October 2026. Original models, diagrams and exercises; no clinical interpretation or treatment guidance.

Apply

Which quantity is common to the two serial barriers at steady state?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At thickness 3 and area 2, find both resistances, rate and drops.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
