Explain hydraulic force gain with displacement and energy

A pressure change imposed on an enclosed static ideal fluid is transmitted through it. At equal heights, two ideal pistons exposed to the same external atmosphere have equal fluid gauge pressure, so Fsmall/Asmall=Flarge/Alarge. This relates the applied forces above ambient; piston weights, friction and different outside pressures would need separate terms.

Learning outcome: Compare area ratios2,4 and6 at input force60 N. Predict output displacement and work before capture. Then alter force at fixed ratio. Keep pressure, force and work in separate rows with their different units.

With small area0.001 m², area ratio4 and input force60 N, gauge pressure is60000 Pa and output force240 N. Moving the small piston0.10 m displaces0.0001 m³, so the large piston moves0.025 m. Input work6 J equals output work240×0.025=6 J.

A larger output force comes with proportionally smaller output displacement.

Equal-height pressure gives Fsmall/Asmall=Flarge/Alarge. Incompressibility gives AsmallΔxsmall=AlargeΔxlarge, so ideal work is conserved. If piston heights differ, include the hydrostatic pressure difference and gravitational energy rather than imposing equal pressure blindly.

Understand

1. Frame the question

2. Build the mechanism

An area ratio larger than one increases the force delivered by the larger piston. It does not create energy. Conservation of fluid volume requires AsmallΔxsmall=AlargeΔxlarge, so the larger piston moves a proportionally shorter distance. Multiplying force by displacement gives equal ideal input and output work when elevation and losses are absent.

Equal pressure must not be imposed across unequal heights without checking hydrostatics. If the large piston is Δy higher, its fluid pressure is lower byρgΔy. A portion of input work can then change the gravitational energy of the fluid. Likewise, friction, leakage and non-negligible piston inertia change the simple quasi-static calculation.

The recipe is a force-and-work thought model, not a design for a jack or press. It supplies ideal piston areas and a short displacement, without material limits, stability, seals or safe-load ratings. A computed force is not permission to lift a real object or pressurize equipment.

3. Work an example

4. Predict and investigate

5. Transfer to a new case

Try a new practice case

The large piston area is five times the small area. If the small piston moves0.15 m, find the large-piston displacement magnitude.

This extra practice is not saved and does not award mastery. Record your first answer, explanation and whether you revealed help in the lesson notebook. Use the lesson’s saved question separately.

6. Explain the boundary

What additional term is needed if the output piston is at a greater elevation?

These bounded virtual recipes and supplied observations are not independent measurements, observed laboratory work or equipment safety calculations. No lifting, pressurizing, deep-water activity or physical jet construction is requested. Practical evidence requires an appropriate supervised setting.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
