Conserve mass flow without inventing a branch split

In timeΔt, fluid moving at mean speedv through cross-sectional areaA transports volumeAvΔt. Its volume flow rate isQ=Av and mass flow rate isρAv. A steady control volume has no accumulating mass, so incoming mass flow equals total outgoing mass flow. For the same incompressible fluid, density cancels and the volume flows balance.

Learning outcome: At inlet speed1, compare branch fractions0.25,0.5 and0.75. Reconstruct eachQ from its own area and speed, then sum. Change inlet speed while fixing the split and predict all flow ratios before capture. State why the fraction requires independent information.

Starting recap

Review density and unit conversion, perpendicular force components, static force balance, work-energy, mass conservation and projectile motion.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

An inlet area0.004 m² and speed1 m/s carryQ=0.004 m³/s. If half enters each branch, areas0.001 and0.002 m² produce speeds2 and1 m/s. Each branch carries0.002 m³/s; total mass flow forρ1000 is4 kg/s. Unequal speeds do not imply unequal branch volume flows.

Incoming volume flow equals the sum of outgoing flows in a steady incompressible junction.

Q=Av and mass flow=ρQ. Continuity alone cannot determine an unknown branch split: pressure and flow resistance or other boundary information are needed. Area varies as radius squared. A fluid element can accelerate by changing direction even if its speed is unchanged.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

1. Frame the question

2. Build the mechanism

In an unbranched full pipe, A1v1=A2v2. A narrower area requires a higher speed for the same volume flow. For circular sections, area isπr²: doubling radius quadruples area, so the speed falls by a factor of four at fixedQ. Do not confuse a radius ratio with an area ratio.

At a junction, Qin=Qbranch1+Qbranch2. This single equation does not determine two unknown branch flows without more information. The recipe supplies a branch fraction deliberately; it is not deduced from branch area. Actual division depends on pressure boundaries, geometry and, for real flows, resistance. A claim that equal areas guarantee equal flows needs additional symmetry assumptions.

Fluid particles obey Newton’s laws. A pressure-force imbalance can change their speed, while forces can also turn their velocity direction at unchanged speed. Continuity states a conservation constraint, not the full force mechanism. Steady flow at fixed positions does not mean each moving fluid particle has zero acceleration as it passes through a contraction or bend.

3. Work an example

4. Predict and investigate

Can two branches have equal flow rates but different speeds?

At inlet speed1, compare branch fractions0.25,0.5 and0.75. Reconstruct eachQ from its own area and speed, then sum. Change inlet speed while fixing the split and predict all flow ratios before capture. State why the fraction requires independent information.

5. Transfer to a new case

Try a new practice case

A full pipe has area0.003 m² and mean speed2 m/s. Find volume flow rate.

This extra practice is not saved and does not award mastery. Record your first answer, explanation and whether you revealed help in the lesson notebook. Use the lesson’s saved question separately.

6. Explain the boundary

How can a fluid particle accelerate inside a steady pipe flow?

These bounded virtual recipes and supplied observations are not independent measurements, observed laboratory work or equipment safety calculations. No lifting, pressurizing, deep-water activity or physical jet construction is requested. Practical evidence requires an appropriate supervised setting.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
