Keep a band-gap interpretation conditional on transport assumptions

A supplied intrinsic-carrier transport family has log conductivity L(T)=A+p ln(T/300)−Theta/T, where Theta=Eg/(2kB). The logarithm is of conductivity relative to a declared reference unit. The exponent p describes a stipulated mobility or prefactor temperature dependence. A is unknown to the inverse analyst even though the teaching generator reveals A=0.

Learning outcome: Fit both two-parameter families with the same two records, keeping the mobility exponent independent. Freeze their third-temperature predictions and check positivity before logarithms. Change the assumed exponent and identify which inferred parameter shifts. Retain an independent-contact or temperature-calibration test.

Starting recap

Review finite sums, exponential and logarithmic functions, radial integration measures, first-order coupled equations and mass-energy units. Keep state counts, occupations, calibration records and unused tests distinct.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For Theta=1000 K and p=1, L300=−10/3 and L400=ln(4/3)−2.5. Removing the known mobility term recovers 1000 K, while ignoring it gives about 1345.218487 K. With kB=8.617333262×10^−5 eV/K, the conditional gap is about 0.172346665 eV. The unused 500 K log response is ln(5/3)−2.

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original indications obey ln(sigma)=A+p ln(T/300)−Theta/T, with A=0 a revealed generator not a known inverse amplitude. Independently stipulated p is used to fit A, Theta from 300 and400 K. A different two-parameter contact-limited resistance R=C+D/T fits the same two records; 500 K is fresh. No unique band gap follows without mobility/contact/model calibration.

The contact-family extrapolation predicts nonpositive resistance and is rejected at the fresh temperature.

Fit the two unknown coefficients only after independently stipulating p. Subtract p ln(T/300), then the slope versus1/T is−Theta. Ignoring p changes the apparent slope. The different two-parameter resistance family C+D/T fits the same two records and may fail positivity or the third reading. Theta=Eg/(2kB) is conditional on the supplied intrinsic-carrier law; mobility, contacts, doping and temperature calibration can invalidate it.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the state and evidence

A supplied intrinsic-carrier transport family has log conductivity L(T)=A+p ln(T/300)−Theta/T, where Theta=Eg/(2kB). The logarithm is of conductivity relative to a declared reference unit. The exponent p describes a stipulated mobility or prefactor temperature dependence. A is unknown to the inverse analyst even though the teaching generator reveals A=0.

Derive the quantitative relation

With p independently fixed, subtract p ln(T/300) and fit A and Theta from only the 300 K and 400 K records. Their difference gives Theta=[L400−L300−p ln(4/3)]/[1/300−1/400]. Freeze the 500 K prediction before revealing its record. Ignoring the mobility term produces an apparent activation parameter shifted by p ln(4/3)/(1/300−1/400).

Test a changed model or boundary

Compare an equally calibrated contact-limited alternative R(T)=C+D/T using the same two conductivity records converted to resistance. This family also has two free coefficients. Its unused-temperature resistance must remain positive before taking a logarithm. A negative extrapolation rejects that family at that temperature; a positive but inaccurate prediction can be assessed against supplied error bounds.

Limit the inference

A successful activation curve does not uniquely establish a band gap. Doping, contact effects, a different mobility exponent, temperature readout error or a varying response gain can alter the interpretation. The workbench reports Eg only conditional on its intrinsic-carrier law and fixed p. No fabrication, heating or electrical measurement is requested.

Sources and boundaries

Original derivations and virtual evidence checked 31 October 2026 against the primary explanation. All questions and numerical packets are original. Supplied theoretical distributions and synthetic records are not actual laboratory measurements. No nuclear, electrical, heating, beam or material-handling procedures are requested. Retain first reasoning, actual criterion critique, revision and a separately assigned unfamiliar task in the course evidence workspace; public keys do not authenticate mastery.

Apply

Why is the fitted activation parameter not automatically a unique measured band gap?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which independent calibration, state-counting or physical-domain premise is needed, and which fresh observation could challenge the inference?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
