Derive a work limit when both source temperatures change
Two finite bodies with constant total capacities Ch and Cc=4 J/K start at Th and 300 K. A cyclic reversible engine can operate between them in infinitesimal steps until their temperatures meet. Unlike ideal infinite reservoirs, these bodies cool and warm; their initial Carnot efficiency cannot be used unchanged for all later heat.
Learning outcome: Derive the weighted geometric and arithmetic endpoints, compare their energy and entropy accounts and justify why irreversible common endpoints cannot deliver more work under the same boundary.

For Ch=2 J/K, Th=600 K, Cc=4 J/K, Tc=300 K, reversible Tf=300×2^(1/3)≈377.976315 K. Maximum work is 2400−6Tf≈132.142110 J. Direct contact ends at 400 K and generates 2 ln(2/3)+4 ln(4/3)≈0.339798 J/K.

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Two finite fixed-volume bodies initially Th and 300 K, constant capacities Ch and Cc=4 J/K. A reversible cyclic engine can exchange heat infinitesimally and deliver work until common temperature. The combined bodies plus engine exchange no external heat; engine returns to its initial state.

Finite sources cool and warm; the reversible endpoint is a weighted geometric mean, not a fixed-temperature efficiency applied throughout.
Zero total entropy change gives Ch ln(Tf/Th)+Cc ln(Tf/Tc)=0. Work is initial minus final body energy. For an irreversible isolated engine-plus-bodies process, total entropy is greater and common final temperature is at least this reversible value, hence work no greater. This limit assumes unchanged capacities, no phase transition, a cyclic engine and no other work/heat reservoirs.
Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Save a science backup or import one
Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.
A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.
Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.
Complete file sets and course backups
A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.
The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
