State the offspring denominator before calculating X-linked probabilities

In the stipulated XX/XY system, an XY parent contributes its X to XX offspring and its Y to XY offspring. An X-linked locus without a corresponding Y allele is therefore represented differently in the two classes. This is one specified inheritance system, not a universal model for sex determination across organisms or a description of every individual’s biology.

Learning outcome: Compare paternal X states at maternal probability 0.5. Retain within-class and whole-cohort probabilities separately. Then change maternal probability to 0.25 and explain which arrows in the inheritance diagram change.

Starting recap

Connect chromosome mechanisms to conditional probabilities, map intervals and phenotype models. State ascertainment, viability, scoring and environment assumptions before interpreting genetic evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With maternal Xr probability 0.5 and a reference paternal X, half of XY offspring are scored, no XX offspring are scored, and one-quarter of the whole cohort is scored. With paternal Xr instead, half of each chromosome class is scored and the whole-cohort fraction becomes one-half.

Does changing the paternal X marker alter the X inherited by an XY offspring in this stipulated system?

Keep sex-conditional and whole-cohort probabilities separate

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Fictional XX/XY system with equal XX and XY probability, recessive fully penetrant X-linked marker and no matching Y allele. Maternal gamete probability is supplied; father contributes X to XX and Y to XY offspring. Equal viability, no mutation; not a human diagnosis or universal sex-determination claim.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A conditional probability within one chromosome class is not its fraction of the entire cohort.

The paternal X goes to XX offspring, not XY offspring. Maternal X transmission determines the XY marker state in this model. Sex-linked, sex-limited and cytoplasmic inheritance are different hypotheses.

Understand

1. Frame the inheritance question

2. Explain mechanisms and assumptions

For a fully penetrant recessive X-linked marker, an XY offspring receiving Xr expresses the marker, while an XX offspring needs Xr from both parents in this simplified model. The maternal probability of supplying Xr is the control. The paternal X state affects XX offspring but is not transmitted to XY offspring.

If half the cohort is XY, a probability of one-half among XY offspring becomes one-quarter of the whole cohort. Mixing these denominators is a common error. State whether the question asks about a randomly selected offspring, a known XY offspring or a specific marker-and-chromosome-class combination before multiplying probabilities.

Sex-linked inheritance differs from a sex-limited phenotype whose locus may be autosomal. Cytoplasmic inheritance, such as many organelle-marker transmission patterns, follows another mechanism and can produce reciprocal-cross differences without an X-linked locus. A pedigree pattern supports hypotheses only after considering penetrance, ascertainment and alternative inheritance mechanisms; it is not diagnostic by itself.

3. Work a quantitative example

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does changing the paternal X marker alter the X inherited by an XY offspring in this stipulated system?

Compare paternal X states at maternal probability 0.5. Retain within-class and whole-cohort probabilities separately. Then change maternal probability to 0.25 and explain which arrows in the inheritance diagram change.

Retain the first prediction, settings, raw values and interpretation in the lesson notebook. All records are original supplied or calculated examples; no breeding, biological intervention or clinical inference is requested.

5. Apply the reasoning to a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

In this model, maternal Xr probability is 0.25 and paternal X is Xr. Find scored fractions among XY, among XX and across the entire equal-class cohort.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Both within-class fractions are 0.25. Each class contributes 0.125 of the whole cohort, totaling 0.25. This result depends on the stated transmission, dominance, penetrance and viability assumptions.

6. Reflect and retain evidence

Name the conditioning event, count boundary and biological replication unit. Which independent observation could distinguish the inheritance mechanism from scoring, viability or environmental alternatives? A public worked response or saved prose does not establish independent assessment or supervised practical participation.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
