Audit an inheritance claim when surviving offspring are a selected sample

A testcross can reveal gamete combinations only through an observation pathway: gametes form, fertilization occurs, offspring survive, markers are expressed and categories are scored. A departure in the final categories need not originate during meiosis. The course-wide task is to separate an inheritance mechanism from survival and readout alternatives while retaining the original data boundary.

Learning outcome: Compare survival factors1 and0.5 at r=0.2, retaining all four initial and surviving categories. Then vary r with survival fixed. Derive the selected denominator before reading the output. Propose an independent observation that could distinguish altered recombination from genotype-specific survival or scoring.

Starting recap

Connect molecular mechanisms to assay and sampling pathways; retain the full causal chain, independently discriminating controls and explicit practical/assessment limits.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At r=0.2, initial expected counts areAB400,Ab100,aB100,ab400. WithAB survival0.5, survivors are200,100,100,400, totaling800. The naive recombinant fraction is200/800=0.25 although true supplied r remains0.2. With outputsAB100,Ab40,aB0,ab0, mean reporter among survivors is(20000+4000)/800=30 units.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can an observed recombinant fraction and a population reporter mean both change while the original meiotic recombination fraction stays fixed?

Separate gamete linkage from survival-biased observed categories

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original AB/ab×ab/ab testcross with gamete fractions(1−r)/2 for AB,ab and r/2 for Ab,aB. Only AB survival is reduced; others survive with factor1. Counts are expectations per1000 initial offspring, not observed integers. Fictional reporter outputs per survivor: AB100,Ab40,aB0,ab0. No other penetrance, assay or viability effect.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A changed surviving phenotype distribution can arise without changing meiotic recombination.

Normalize after the explicitly unequal survival step, not before. The survival-adjusted denominator biases a naive linkage estimate and changes the reporter mean. Actual inference would need independent class-specific survival, marker and assay evidence; the hidden generator truth is teaching information.

Understand

1. Frame the integrated claim

2. Explain the causal and observation model

The fictional parental phase isAB/ab and the testcross partner isab/ab. Before selection, parental gametesAB andab each have probability(1−r)/2; recombinantsAb andaB each have r/2. Only theAB class has a reduced survival factor. The ledger reports expected counts per1000 initial offspring, then normalizes category fractions among survivors. These expectations are not fabricated observations from a performed cross.

A naive recombinant fraction calculated among survivors divides the unchanged recombinant expectation by a smaller selected total. It therefore exceeds the original r whenAB survival is reduced. A fictional cellular reporter also depends on category, so its population mean changes through composition even if every surviving genotype retains the same individual output. This connects linkage, phenotype pathways and population sampling to molecular evidence.

A complete defense names the original experimental unit, missing categories, survival assumptions, marker reliability and reporter calibration. Independent early-stage genotype or survival evidence could challenge the selection explanation. A second observation sharing the same ascertainment or assay bias is not fully independent. No breeding, organism manipulation or clinical interpretation is requested; actual practical work and unfamiliar learner assessment remain separate gates.

3. Work a complete evidence ledger

At r=0.2, initial expected counts areAB400,Ab100,aB100,ab400. WithAB survival0.5, survivors are200,100,100,400, totaling800. The naive recombinant fraction is200/800=0.25 although true supplied r remains0.2. With outputsAB100,Ab40,aB0,ab0, mean reporter among survivors is(20000+4000)/800=30 units.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can an observed recombinant fraction and a population reporter mean both change while the original meiotic recombination fraction stays fixed?

Compare survival factors1 and0.5 at r=0.2, retaining all four initial and surviving categories. Then vary r with survival fixed. Derive the selected denominator before reading the output. Propose an independent observation that could distinguish altered recombination from genotype-specific survival or scoring.

Preserve first predictions, complete settings and evidence, including a conflicting or rejected interpretation. Distinguish supplied generator truth from information an actual investigator would possess.

5. Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

A changed packet has r=0.3 andAB survival0.5. For1000 initial expected offspring, find total survivors and the naive recombinant fraction among them.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Initial parental classes are350 each and recombinants150 each. Survivors are175,150,150,350, totaling825. The naive recombinant fraction is300/825=4/11≈0.3636, not the original0.3. This is an expected-value illustration, not a measured cross.

6. Review, revise and separate completion gates

Use the full-course evidence workspace to retain a first report, source/recipe evidence, criterion-linked human critique and justified revision. Address all six modules in the cumulative tasks. Disclose viewed public answers; unfamiliar transfer requires a genuinely new retained prompt and qualified independent assessment. Synthetic results, submitted prose and declared review do not certify actual supervised laboratory participation, apparatus competence, institutional credit or learner mastery.

Apply

With fixed r, reduced survival of one parental class can make the recombinant fraction among survivors:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

A changed packet has r=0.3 andAB survival0.5. For1000 initial expected offspring, find total survivors and the naive recombinant fraction among them.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
