Condition a genotype inference on how the offspring was selected

A Punnett square gives probabilities conditional on parental genotypes and a specified inheritance model. In an Aa×Aa cross, the prior genotype probabilities are 1/4 AA, 1/2 Aa and 1/4 aa under equal gamete transmission and viability. If only phenotype-negative offspring are selected for further reasoning, the relevant denominator changes.

Learning outcome: Compare penetrance 1 and 0.8 with the same prior cross. Sum the posterior probabilities and distinguish the selected parent’s transmission from its carrier probability. Then vary the partner probability and explain the independence assumptions.

Starting recap

Connect chromosome mechanisms to conditional probabilities, map intervals and phenotype models. State ascertainment, viability, scoring and environment assumptions before interpreting genetic evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At full penetrance, a negative offspring has carrier probability 2/3 and transmits a with probability 1/3. With a known Aa partner, the next offspring’s aa probability is 1/6. At penetrance 0.8, the negative probability is 0.8 and posterior weights are AA 0.3125, Aa 0.625 and aa 0.0625.

Update a genotype probability after a phenotype observation

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Fictional autosomal recessive marker from Aa×Aa: prior AA1/4,Aa1/2,aa1/4. Only aa can express the scored phenotype, with supplied penetrance. Select a phenotype-negative offspring. Partner is Aa with stated probability, otherwise AA. Equal viability, no new mutation, independence and no diagnostic claim.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Conditioning changes genotype probabilities; incomplete penetrance leaves aa among phenotype-negative offspring.

Normalize the compatible prior weights. The familiar 2/3 carrier value applies only to the fully penetrant Aa×Aa recessive-marker model with equal viability. This fictional exercise is not genetic counseling.

Understand

1. Frame the inheritance question

2. Explain mechanisms and assumptions

For a fully penetrant recessive marker, aa is always scored positive and the other genotypes are negative. Among negative offspring, the remaining prior weights 1/4 and 1/2 normalize to 1/3 AA and 2/3 Aa. The two-thirds carrier result is therefore a conditional calculation, not a general property of every phenotype-negative individual.

Incomplete penetrance means some individuals with a specified genotype do not express the scored phenotype under the stated conditions. If aa penetrance is p and no other genotype is positive, the negative observation has probability 1−p/4. Its compatible aa weight is (1−p)/4. Normalize all three weights; excluding aa entirely would make a false certainty from a negative phenotype.

To predict a further fictional cross, first find the selected parent’s probability of transmitting a, then combine it with the partner’s transmission probability. Genotype probability and phenotype probability remain separate when penetrance is incomplete. These hypothetical marker calculations are not personal genetic counseling, diagnosis or estimates for an actual family.

3. Work a quantitative example

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does a phenotype-negative observation rule out aa when penetrance is below one?

Compare penetrance 1 and 0.8 with the same prior cross. Sum the posterior probabilities and distinguish the selected parent’s transmission from its carrier probability. Then vary the partner probability and explain the independence assumptions.

Retain the first prediction, settings, raw values and interpretation in the lesson notebook. All records are original supplied or calculated examples; no breeding, biological intervention or clinical inference is requested.

5. Apply the reasoning to a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

From Aa×Aa with aa penetrance 0.6, select a negative offspring. Compute posterior Aa and aa probabilities and the probability of transmitting a.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Negative probability is 0.85. Posterior Aa is 0.5/0.85=10/17; posterior aa is 0.1/0.85=2/17. Transmission probability is half of 10/17 plus 2/17=7/17. A negative phenotype has not excluded aa.

6. Reflect and retain evidence

Name the conditioning event, count boundary and biological replication unit. Which independent observation could distinguish the inheritance mechanism from scoring, viability or environmental alternatives? A public worked response or saved prose does not establish independent assessment or supervised practical participation.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
