Track passive diffusion without an infinite reservoir assumption

Passive transport moves a permeating substance down its relevant chemical or electrochemical potential gradient. In the neutral-solute model here, a concentration difference drives net flux. Individual molecules can cross in both directions even when net movement is toward the lower-concentration compartment.

Learning outcome: Compare outside8 atP1 andP2. At several displayed times reconstruct inside amount plus outside amount. Then set outside below2 to reverse the initial flux. Explain the difference between concentration and amount at equilibrium.

Starting recap

Connect calibrated dimensions, cell organization, material balance and membrane energetics. State the model boundary before interpreting a changed condition.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With outside8mmol/L, total amount is2×1+8×4=34mmol. Equal equilibrium concentration is34/5=6.8mmol/L. Initial inward flux atP=1L/min is6mmol/min; doublingP doubles that initial flux but leaves6.8mmol/L unchanged.

Predict

If permeability doubles in a closed system, should the final equilibrium concentration double, or should only the approach speed change?

Follow a solute between two finite compartments

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Closed, well-mixed compartments: inside1L starts at2mmol/L; outside4L starts at the selected value. Neutral permeating solute, fixed volumes, no reactions. Flux=P×(cout−cin); P includes area. Exponential mixing is an idealized supplied solution, not measured membrane kinetics.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Permeability changes approach speed, not the closed-system equilibrium inventory.

Balance d(cin)/dt=P(cout−cin)/1L and conserve cin×1L+cout×4L. At equilibrium concentrations match, but amounts remain in the1:4 volume ratio. Molecules continue microscopic exchange even when net flux is zero.

Understand

1. Orient: Track passive diffusion without an infinite reservoir assumption

Passive transport moves a permeating substance down its relevant chemical or electrochemical potential gradient. In the neutral-solute model here, a concentration difference drives net flux. Individual molecules can cross in both directions even when net movement is toward the lower-concentration compartment.

2. Explain the mechanism and boundary

Finite compartments change one another as solute moves. Inside volume1L starts at2mmol/L, while outside volume4L starts at a selected concentration. Total amount is inside concentration times1L plus outside concentration times4L. If no reaction or external exchange occurs, that sum stays constant at every modeled time.

The effective permeability-times-area coefficientP multiplies the concentration difference to give flux inmmol/min. IncreasingP changes how quickly the concentrations approach one another. It does not change the final equilibrium concentration imposed by conserved amount and total volume. Treating outside concentration as permanently fixed would describe a different, externally maintained reservoir.

The well-mixed compartments are a macroscopic teaching analogue, not literal cell dimensions. The model omits unstirred layers, membrane selectivity changes, solvent flow and reactions. Equilibrium means zero net solute flux, not frozen molecular motion. Equal concentrations at equilibrium also do not mean equal amounts when compartment volumes differ.

3. Work a quantitative example

With outside8mmol/L, total amount is2×1+8×4=34mmol. Equal equilibrium concentration is34/5=6.8mmol/L. Initial inward flux atP=1L/min is6mmol/min; doublingP doubles that initial flux but leaves6.8mmol/L unchanged.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: If permeability doubles in a closed system, should the final equilibrium concentration double, or should only the approach speed change?

Compare outside8 atP1 andP2. At several displayed times reconstruct inside amount plus outside amount. Then set outside below2 to reverse the initial flux. Explain the difference between concentration and amount at equilibrium.

Retain your initial prediction, control settings and all relevant displayed evidence in the lesson notebook. The schematic and calculated records are original synthetic teaching material, not measurements of a physical specimen.

5. Transfer and explain

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

A closed1L inside compartment starts at3mmol/L and a4L outside compartment at8mmol/L. Find the shared equilibrium concentration for a neutral permeating solute with no reaction.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Total amount=3+32=35mmol and total volume5L, so equilibrium concentration is7mmol/L. Final amounts are7mmol inside and28mmol outside. Permeability affects timing rather than this conserved endpoint.

6. Reflect and retain evidence

Explain the link from cellular structure or membrane process to the modeled observation. State a competing explanation, an omitted variable and one independent comparison that could challenge your conclusion. Do not turn a simulated observation into a claim of laboratory participation or independently demonstrated practical skill.

Apply

What changes when only effective permeability doubles in the stated closed diffusion model?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

A closed1L inside compartment starts at3mmol/L and a4L outside compartment at8mmol/L. Find the shared equilibrium concentration for a neutral permeating solute with no reaction.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
