Explain a phenotype ratio with a biochemical interaction

Dominance describes how alleles at one locus relate to a defined phenotype; it does not mean that an allele is common, stronger in every sense or always beneficial. With incomplete dominance, the heterozygote can have an intermediate score; with codominance, distinguishable contributions of both alleles can be observed. Different measurement levels can reveal different dominance relationships.

Learning outcome: Compare A-function probabilities 0.5 and 0.75 at B probability 0.75. Then change B alone. Check that categories remain exhaustive and identify an intermediate readout that would discriminate the pathway from an unrelated scoring artifact.

Starting recap

Connect chromosome mechanisms to conditional probabilities, map intervals and phenotype models. State ascertainment, viability, scoring and environment assumptions before interpreting genetic evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With functional probabilities 0.75 for both loci, final, intermediate and absent categories are 0.5625, 0.1875 and 0.25, summing to one. If A function probability becomes 0.5 while B remains 0.75, they become 0.375, 0.125 and 0.5.

Connect epistasis to a defined biochemical scoring rule

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Independent loci in a fictional pigment pathway: A function makes intermediate; B function converts it to final pigment. A_ B_ final, A_ bb intermediate, aa __ none. Supplied probabilities are phenotype-functional probabilities, not allele frequencies; no linkage or viability difference.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

An upstream loss masks the downstream genotype under this defined scoring rule.

For independent AaBb×AaBb with complete functional dominance at each locus, probabilities 3/4 and 3/4 yield 9:3:4. Epistasis describes interactions between loci, unlike dominance between alleles at one locus.

Understand

1. Frame the inheritance question

2. Explain mechanisms and assumptions

Epistasis concerns interactions between loci. In the fictional pathway, A function makes an intermediate and B function converts it into final pigment. If A is absent, the downstream B state cannot create the missing substrate. Thus an upstream loss masks the downstream genotype for this particular pigment readout, without erasing the B gene from the genome.

For independent AaBb×AaBb under complete functional dominance at each locus, each function is present with probability 3/4. Final pigment has probability (3/4)(3/4)=9/16; intermediate-only is (3/4)(1/4)=3/16; no intermediate is 1/4=4/16. The familiar 9:3:4 pattern follows the mechanistic scoring rule, not a new universal law replacing segregation.

Alternative pathways, incomplete enzyme activity, linkage, differential survival or a different phenotype threshold can alter the observed categories. A ratio alone cannot prove a unique enzyme sequence. Independent intermediate measurements and a conditional rescue can test the proposed upstream requirement, connecting genetic inference to the pathway-evidence reasoning from earlier modules.

3. Work a quantitative example

With functional probabilities 0.75 for both loci, final, intermediate and absent categories are 0.5625, 0.1875 and 0.25, summing to one. If A function probability becomes 0.5 while B remains 0.75, they become 0.375, 0.125 and 0.5.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can the downstream genotype change the pigment category when the required upstream intermediate is absent?

Compare A-function probabilities 0.5 and 0.75 at B probability 0.75. Then change B alone. Check that categories remain exhaustive and identify an intermediate readout that would discriminate the pathway from an unrelated scoring artifact.

Retain the first prediction, settings, raw values and interpretation in the lesson notebook. All records are original supplied or calculated examples; no breeding, biological intervention or clinical inference is requested.

5. Apply the reasoning to a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

For independent functional probabilities A=0.5 and B=0.5 in this pathway, find all three phenotype fractions.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Final pigment is 0.25, intermediate-only is 0.25 and no intermediate is 0.5. These probabilities follow the supplied sequential requirement and do not describe allele frequencies directly.

6. Reflect and retain evidence

Name the conditioning event, count boundary and biological replication unit. Which independent observation could distinguish the inheritance mechanism from scoring, viability or environmental alternatives? A public worked response or saved prose does not establish independent assessment or supervised practical participation.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
