Distinguish resistance, tolerance and a heterogeneous endpoint

Resistance, tolerance and persistence are distinct evidence concepts. Resistance concerns an increased ability to grow under an inhibitory agent relative to a susceptible comparison. Tolerance concerns slower killing without necessarily shifting the growth-inhibition threshold; persistence is a heterogeneous tolerant subpopulation rather than simply any infection that lasts a long time. These phenotype definitions do not by themselves identify one molecular mechanism.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct both component contributions and compare the same count under two supplied phenotype-history records. Name which growth-threshold or survival distinction must be established independently rather than inferred from the count.

Starting recap

Bound control and susceptibility interpretations by measurement, heterogeneity, source frames and unused evidence; distinguish resistance, tolerance and nonrecovery without operational or clinical claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At f=0.2, the fast component contributes 8 remaining units and the slow component 100, total 108. The slow share is 100/108=25/27≈0.925926. Changing the supplied phenotype-history label does not change these endpoint counts; it changes the additional evidence available for interpretation.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A heterogeneous endpoint does not by itself identify inherited resistance; independent phenotype and history evidence matter.

Understand

Define the evidence boundary

Resistance, tolerance and persistence are distinct evidence concepts. Resistance concerns an increased ability to grow under an inhibitory agent relative to a susceptible comparison. Tolerance concerns slower killing without necessarily shifting the growth-inhibition threshold; persistence is a heterogeneous tolerant subpopulation rather than simply any infection that lasts a long time. These phenotype definitions do not by themselves identify one molecular mechanism.

Connect mechanism and measurement

Resistance mechanisms can involve altered targets, agent inactivation or changed entry/efflux. Tolerance and persistence can involve multiple physiological or genetic determinants; they are not defined solely by dormancy, and a heritable change can affect a tolerance trait too. Thus “genetic” versus “not genetic” is not a complete classification rule. The relevant growth/survival phenotype and its context must be distinguished.

The fictional endpoint begins with 1000 units: fraction f in a slow-response component has recorded retention 0.5, while the rest retains 0.01. These are interpreted existing records, not instructions to create, select or isolate survivors. Expected remaining count is 1000[(1−f)0.01+f 0.5]. The same endpoint can coexist with different independently supplied evidence about whether a shifted susceptibility persists or returns to baseline after a documented state reset.

A return to baseline is compatible with reversible state-dependent tolerance/persistence rather than proof of a stable inherited resistance shift, but it does not uniquely identify the cause. A persistent shifted growth-susceptibility record supports an inherited-change interpretation without assigning its sequence or mechanism. No organism, treatment conditions, regrowth protocol or clinical decision is supplied.

Reconstruct the original record

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use f=0.1. Find both contributions and the slow share; can that share by itself prove a genetic resistance mechanism?

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

The fast contribution is 9 and slow 50, total 59, so slow share 50/59≈0.847458. The enriched slow component alone proves neither a shifted growth threshold nor a specific inherited mechanism.

Retain bounded evidence

Preserve the original source, first response, units, uncertainty and feedback exposure in the Microbiology evidence workspace. All numerical records are fictional. No culture, control-process execution, chemical preparation, genetic manipulation, resistance generation, participant testing or clinical decision is requested. Actual practical and independent learner competence remain separate.

Which inference is supported by this fictional supplied record?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Use f=0.1. Find both contributions and the slow share; can that share by itself prove a genetic resistance mechanism?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
