Explain descendant clusters without need-directed mutation

A mutation can occur before a later condition makes its consequences visible. The future usefulness of a variant does not imply that a cell generated it because it anticipated that need. Descendants share ancestry, so an early event can produce a cluster of related carriers rather than independent mutation events in every carrier.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct the descendant tree and descriptive moments for early and late events. State which timing and inheritance rules were stipulated, and name an alternative source of variation in an actual family record.

Starting recap

Trace copying, expression, inherited variation and horizontal-route evidence while separating sampling, ancestry, selection and model uncertainty.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For an event after generation one, x=2³=8 endpoint carriers occur in one of four families. The record [8,0,0,0] has mean two and population variance (64/4)−4=12. An event after generation three gives [2,0,0,0], mean 0.5 and variance 0.75.

Why can one event create several endpoint carriers without several independent origins?

Separate neutral event timing from endpoint count

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Every family has 16 endpoint cells after four abstract divisions. Exactly one family has one neutral event in one cell after generation a; its 2^(4−a) descendants retain the marker. Other families have zero. This is a stipulated genealogy, not a mutation-rate estimator or biological selection experiment.

Understand

Define the evidence

A mutation can occur before a later condition makes its consequences visible. The future usefulness of a variant does not imply that a cell generated it because it anticipated that need. Descendants share ancestry, so an early event can produce a cluster of related carriers rather than independent mutation events in every carrier.

Connect mechanism and measurement

The original abstract genealogy gives every family sixteen endpoint cells after four binary divisions. Exactly one family experiences one neutral marker event in one cell after completed generation g. That cell has 2^(4−g) endpoint descendants, all stipulated to retain the marker. Other families contain none. No organism, growth duration, selective medium or resistance trait is specified.

Across k families, if the affected family has x carriers, the mean is x/k and population variance is x²/k−(x/k)². This uses all supplied families as the descriptive population, so it divides by k rather than k−1. Earlier event timing raises the descendant cluster and its variance in this stipulated case; the calculation is not a general mutation-rate estimator.

Actual fluctuation evidence requires a model of genealogy, event probabilities, survival and measurement. Extra variance can also arise from variable starting populations or sampling. Historical support for preexisting mutation does not mean every heterogeneous endpoint proves that mechanism; record the alternatives and avoid counting related descendants as independent origins.

Reconstruct the original record

For an event after generation one, x=2³=8 endpoint carriers occur in one of four families. The record [8,0,0,0] has mean two and population variance (64/4)−4=12. An event after generation three gives [2,0,0,0], mean 0.5 and variance 0.75.

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use generation two and eight endpoint families. Find the affected-family count, mean and population variance.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

The affected family has four carriers; the mean is 4/8=0.5 and variance 16/8−0.25=1.75. These moments summarize the supplied genealogy, not a fitted mutation rate.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
