Keep clearing-zone geometry separate from a potency claim

A region without visible growth in an inhibition image is an observation under particular conditions. It does not by itself distinguish inhibition of growth from killing, establish a molecular target or rank clinical effectiveness. Diffusion, solubility, source geometry, medium and the organism’s response can affect the apparent boundary.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct the geometry and compare two source sizes at the same outer radius. Identify which additional biological and calibration evidence would be required before any susceptibility interpretation.

Starting recap

Bound control and susceptibility interpretations by measurement, heterogeneity, source frames and unused evidence; distinguish resistance, tolerance and nonrecovery without operational or clinical claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At R=3 and r=1, outer diameter 6 and clear width 2 are lengths, while clear annulus area is 8π≈25.1327 square image units. The source areaπ is excluded from the annulus. None of these values determines killing or a clinical category.

Understand

Define the evidence boundary

A region without visible growth in an inhibition image is an observation under particular conditions. It does not by itself distinguish inhibition of growth from killing, establish a molecular target or rank clinical effectiveness. Diffusion, solubility, source geometry, medium and the organism’s response can affect the apparent boundary.

Connect mechanism and measurement

The original diagram contains a source disk of radius r and an outer clear boundary of radius R, in arbitrary image units. The outer diameter is 2R, the clear annulus width is R−r and its area isπ(R²−r²). Each describes a different geometric quantity; doubling diameter does not merely double area.

No actual antimicrobial, microorganism, concentration, duration, clinical breakpoint or culture condition is supplied. A radius control changes an already supplied image geometry rather than prescribing a biological assay. The arbitrary units must not be relabeled as a validated susceptibility measurement.

Standardized susceptibility interpretation depends on an appropriate method, organism/agent context, controls and current authoritative criteria. Two different agents’ raw zones cannot simply be compared as a universal potency scale. This lesson teaches what a visible region does and does not establish, not how to perform or clinically interpret a live assay.

Reconstruct the original record

At R=3 and r=1, outer diameter 6 and clear width 2 are lengths, while clear annulus area is 8π≈25.1327 square image units. The source areaπ is excluded from the annulus. None of these values determines killing or a clinical category.

Predict and investigate

Predict first: Why do diameter, annulus width and area fail as interchangeable summaries?

Reconstruct the geometry and compare two source sizes at the same outer radius. Identify which additional biological and calibration evidence would be required before any susceptibility interpretation.

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use R=4, r=1.5. Find diameter, width and clear annulus area.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

Diameter 8, width 2.5 and areaπ(16−2.25)=13.75π≈43.1969 square image units. A larger area is a geometric fact, not a validated ranking of clinical performance.

Retain bounded evidence

Preserve the original source, first response, units, uncertainty and feedback exposure in the Microbiology evidence workspace. All numerical records are fictional. No culture, control-process execution, chemical preparation, genetic manipulation, resistance generation, participant testing or clinical decision is requested. Actual practical and independent learner competence remain separate.

Primary mechanism or evidence context, checked 31 October 2026. Original teaching and supplied records; no source operating procedures copied.

Which inference is supported by this fictional supplied record?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Use R=4, r=1.5. Find diameter, width and clear annulus area.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
