Separate community composition from absolute abundance

A microbial community contains interacting populations, but a composition table reports fractions of whatever was counted. Relative abundance is a part divided by a total. A change in another class can therefore change a focal class’s fraction even when the focal abundance itself stays constant. Sequence fractions, cell fractions and biomass fractions are different quantities unless their measurement relationship is established.

Learning outcome: Reconstruct counts and fractions for a fixed-A record and an equal-scaling record. Identify which conclusions require an independently measured total and which follow from composition alone.

Starting recap

Distinguish community composition, observation bias and process contribution; conserve explicit material currencies and bound causal or useful-application claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With a=1, b=0.5, the changed record is A20, B15, C25, total 60. A’s fraction rises from 0.2 to 1/3 even though its absolute change is zero. With both multipliers 0.5, total 50 has A10 but A’s fraction remains 0.2.

Understand

Define the community evidence

A microbial community contains interacting populations, but a composition table reports fractions of whatever was counted. Relative abundance is a part divided by a total. A change in another class can therefore change a focal class’s fraction even when the focal abundance itself stays constant. Sequence fractions, cell fractions and biomass fractions are different quantities unless their measurement relationship is established.

Connect mechanism and boundary

The original baseline has classes A, B and C with abundance units 20, 30 and 50. A changes by multiplier a while B and C change by b. The total becomes 20a+80b and A’s fraction is 20a/(20a+80b). These are supplied comparison records, not a simulated biological cause. The class labels do not imply taxonomic species or identical cell sizes.

If every class is halved, every fraction stays unchanged despite a halved total. If only B and C are halved, A’s fraction rises even though A does not increase. Independent total abundance, measurement calibration and a defined sampling frame are therefore needed before interpreting a compositional shift as growth or loss.

Competition, cross-feeding, immigration, predation and abiotic change can alter a real community. Relative counts alone do not identify which mechanism acted. Preserve the observation unit, baseline denominator and timing; a stronger biological story needs evidence beyond a normalized bar chart.

Reconstruct the original record

With a=1, b=0.5, the changed record is A20, B15, C25, total 60. A’s fraction rises from 0.2 to 1/3 even though its absolute change is zero. With both multipliers 0.5, total 50 has A10 but A’s fraction remains 0.2.

Predict and investigate

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use a=1.5, b=1. Find A’s absolute change, total and fraction.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

A becomes 30, an increase 10. B30 and C50 make total 110, so A’s fraction is 3/11≈0.272727. The absolute and fractional changes are related but not numerically the same quantity.

Retain bounded evidence

Preserve the original record, first reasoning, units, sources and feedback exposure in the Microbiology evidence workspace. All numerical records are original fictional evidence, not measured field or treatment performance. No culture, process setup, biological handling or safety certification is requested.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
