SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Separate reduced recovery from actual remaining material

A lower recovered count can reflect fewer recoverable units in the original system, a weaker recovery process or interference carried into the measurement. These alternatives require controls with a clear purpose. A control is not merely an extra sample label: it should test an assumption that could change the interpretation.

Learning outcome: Hold r fixed and change q, then distinguish physical change from measurement change. Explain what independent calibration evidence is required before dividing by a recovery factor.

Starting recap

Bound control and susceptibility interpretations by measurement, heterogeneity, source frames and unused evidence; distinguish resistance, tolerance and nonrecovery without operational or clinical claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At r=0.2, q=0.5, true remaining units 200 produce measured 100. The naive remaining fraction 0.1 suggests one log reduction; the corrected fraction 0.2 gives log 10(5)≈0.69897. The extra apparent 0.30103 log comes entirely from incomplete recovery.

Predict

Can an apparent improvement occur when the true remaining fraction has not changed?

Understand

Define the evidence boundary

A lower recovered count can reflect fewer recoverable units in the original system, a weaker recovery process or interference carried into the measurement. These alternatives require controls with a clear purpose. A control is not merely an extra sample label: it should test an assumption that could change the interpretation.

Connect mechanism and measurement

The original initial inventory is 1000 units. True remaining fraction r gives 1000r units, while an independently supplied recovery fraction q yields measured 1000rq. An analyst who ignores recovery infers remaining fraction rq rather than r. Dividing the measurement by q recovers the stipulated truth only when q applies to this same record.

The naive log reduction is−log 10(rq); corrected reduction is−log 10 r. Their difference−log 10 q comes from the observation process, not extra inactivation. Unknown or context-dependent recovery makes the inverse correction uncertain. A measured deficit can also include aggregation or a different counting unit.

Real validation may distinguish residual effects, measurement specificity and recovery limitations, but this lesson provides no neutralization reagent, culture sequence or biological control procedure. It interprets fictional already supplied control evidence without establishing clinical efficacy or a sterile endpoint.

Reconstruct the original record

At r=0.2, q=0.5, true remaining units 200 produce measured 100. The naive remaining fraction 0.1 suggests one log reduction; the corrected fraction 0.2 gives log 10(5)≈0.69897. The extra apparent 0.30103 log comes entirely from incomplete recovery.

Predict and investigate

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Use r=0.1, q=0.25. Find true/measured counts and naive/corrected log reduction.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

True remaining 100, measured 25. Naive reduction is log 10(40)≈1.60206; corrected reduction is 1. The recovery loss explains the additional apparent 0.60206 log units.

Retain bounded evidence

Preserve the original source, first response, units, uncertainty and feedback exposure in the Microbiology evidence workspace. All numerical records are fictional. No culture, control-process execution, chemical preparation, genetic manipulation, resistance generation, participant testing or clinical decision is requested. Actual practical and independent learner competence remain separate.

Which inference is supported by this fictional supplied record?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Use r=0.1, q=0.25. Find true/measured counts and naive/corrected log reduction.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
