Distinguish taxon abundance from a measured community function

Community membership and community function are related but not identical. Different populations can contribute to a similar transformation, while a population can change its activity across contexts. Functional redundancy therefore refers to a specified process under specified conditions, not a guarantee that all taxa are interchangeable or that diversity never matters.

Learning outcome: Compare the two equal-function records and then remove A mathematically while holding B fixed. Identify which conclusions depend on additivity and which would require independent compensation or interaction evidence.

Starting recap

Distinguish community composition, observation bias and process contribution; conserve explicit material currencies and bound causal or useful-application claims.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At n=20, r=2, A contributes 60 and B40, total 100 process units across 80 abundance units. Function per total abundance is 1.25. Removing A without changing B leaves 40, not 100; an assumed compensating response would need new evidence.

Different abundance patterns can support the same stipulated function, and redundancy is function-specific.

Understand

Define the community evidence

Community membership and community function are related but not identical. Different populations can contribute to a similar transformation, while a population can change its activity across contexts. Functional redundancy therefore refers to a specified process under specified conditions, not a guarantee that all taxa are interchangeable or that diversity never matters.

Connect mechanism and boundary

The original additive record gives class A a contribution of three process units per abundance unit. Class B has abundance 20 and supplied per-unit contribution r, while class C has abundance 40 but contributes zero to this particular measured function. If A abundance is n, total abundance is n+60 and the specified process is 3n+20r. Zero contribution here does not mean C has no ecological role.

At n=10, r=4 and n=30, r=1, the process total is 110 in both cases despite different total abundance and different contribution structure. Removing A with B unchanged leaves only 20r. Compensation by B is not automatic: it would require an observed change in abundance or per-unit activity rather than an assumption that a remaining group fills every role.

Biological wastewater treatment illustrates why process and boundary matter: microorganisms transform organic material and nutrient species, and separate physical steps remove some biomass or other material. Nitrification alone changes nitrogen species rather than guaranteeing total nitrogen removal. The original additive ledger supplies no wastewater operating method, pollutant-removal guarantee or safe-effluent determination.

Reconstruct the original record

Defend a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed boundary

Compare n=10, r=4 with n=30, r=1. Find total abundance, total function and function remaining without A.

Retain the first response, units, uncertainty and any prior feedback exposure in the notebook before comparing this public explanation.

Compare a worked response

The first has abundance 70, function 110 and remaining B function 80. The second has abundance 90, function 110 and remaining B function 20. The equal initial total hides very different dependence on A.

Retain bounded evidence

Preserve the original record, first reasoning, units, sources and feedback exposure in the Microbiology evidence workspace. All numerical records are original fictional evidence, not measured field or treatment performance. No culture, process setup, biological handling or safety certification is requested.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
