SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Use polarization to distinguish transverse structure from intensity

An electromagnetic plane wave has electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other and to its propagation direction. Its polarization specifies the electric-field oscillation orientation. A longitudinal sound disturbance in an ordinary fluid has no comparable independent transverse direction, so the same polarizer argument does not apply to it. This wave polarization is different from separating positive and negative charges in an electrostatic material.

Learning outcome: Compare 0°, 45° and 90° with the same initial intensity, then change only intensity. Retain both stage outputs and explain the changed polarization direction between stages. Separately order visible red/violet by frequency without assigning different vacuum speeds.

Starting recap

Distinguish spatial and temporal axes, signed disturbances, material boundaries and exact versus approximate wave geometry. Identify supplied numerical enrichment before applying it.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With initially polarized intensity 8 W/m² and θ=45°, the first analyzer transmits 4 W/m². A final horizontal analyzer transmits half of that, 2 W/m². Without the intermediate analyzer, ideal crossed vertical/horizontal orientations transmit zero. Both stages still reduce their own incident intensity.

Predict

Does nonzero transmission after adding a middle analyzer mean that analyzer created light energy?

Adding a middle orientation changes which field component reaches the crossed final filter; no stage creates energy.

Initially linearly polarized light differs from an unpolarized beam. The cosine-squared numerical law is optional enrichment; transverse orientation and intensity reduction are core. The first filter also changes the transmitted polarization direction. Longitudinal sound does not have this transverse orientation freedom. All electromagnetic spectral bands share vacuum speed, not wavelength.

Understand

Establish the model and evidence

An electromagnetic plane wave has electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other and to its propagation direction. Its polarization specifies the electric-field oscillation orientation. A longitudinal sound disturbance in an ordinary fluid has no comparable independent transverse direction, so the same polarizer argument does not apply to it. This wave polarization is different from separating positive and negative charges in an electrostatic material.

Reflection at an interface, propagation through a suitable optical material, or a direction-selective opening can also preferentially select transverse oscillation directions. Predict whether the same orientation filter could select a transverse direction for a longitudinal sound wave in an ordinary fluid: it cannot, because that wave has no independent transverse oscillation direction.

A polarizer transmits a selected field component and may reduce intensity, the average power per unit area. The supplied input is already vertically polarized; it is not unpolarized light. After passing an ideal analyzer at angle θ, the transmitted direction is that analyzer’s axis. A final horizontal analyzer therefore acts on a changed input orientation, not directly on the original vertical field.

As optional quantitative enrichment, the first intensity is I0 cos²θ. With a horizontal final analyzer, the second is I0 cos²θ sin²θ. A middle analyzer can make transmission through crossed first/final orientations nonzero, but every individual stage remains passive: final intensity never exceeds the intensity reaching it. This does not imply filters produce energy or that a larger number always increases transmission.

Polarization alone does not identify a spectral band. In vacuum, radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray waves share speed c while wavelength decreases and frequency increases in that sequence. Electromagnetic waves require no material medium. Within visible light, decreasing wavelength follows red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Predict which has higher frequency, orange or blue, then check: blue has shorter wavelength and higher frequency, but the same vacuum speed. Exact band endpoints are not required here; boundaries and material response can depend on convention. No radiation exposure, solar viewing or clinical optical test is part of the activity.

Work a reference case

With initially polarized intensity 8 W/m² and θ=45°, the first analyzer transmits 4 W/m². A final horizontal analyzer transmits half of that, 2 W/m². Without the intermediate analyzer, ideal crossed vertical/horizontal orientations transmit zero. Both stages still reduce their own incident intensity.

Predict before investigating

Does nonzero transmission after adding a middle analyzer mean that analyzer created light energy?

Compare 0°, 45° and 90° with the same initial intensity, then change only intensity. Retain both stage outputs and explain the changed polarization direction between stages. Separately order visible red/violet by frequency without assigning different vacuum speeds.

Transfer to changed conditions

Using the supplied enrichment law, start with 12 W/m² vertical input and a 30° intermediate analyzer. Find the intermediate and final-horizontal intensities and explain why they do not violate energy conservation.

Compare your reasoning

The first is 12×3/4=9 W/m²; the final is 9×1/4=2.25 W/m². Both are below their own incident intensities. The transmitted direction changes between stages.

Reflect and qualify the evidence

What assumption would fail if the initial beam were unpolarized rather than the declared vertical input?

Sources and boundaries

Original text, calculations and diagrams; checked 30 October 2026 against the current AP Physics 2 course framework and primary textbook verification. Controls generate virtual evidence, not actual measurements or independent practical competence. No lasers, sunlight focusing, loud audio, traffic observations or chemical-film preparation are requested. Public feedback is practice; retain your derivation and critique in the course evidence workspace.

Clause-level source/action reconciliation checked 31 October 2026 against the linked current framework and Fall 2026 clarification. Added packets are original virtual comparisons; no new practical or learner-completion claim.

Apply

Using the supplied optional projection law, for 8 W/m² vertically polarized input, a 45° analyzer followed by a horizontal analyzer transmits:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

What assumption would fail if the initial beam were unpolarized rather than the declared vertical input?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
