Convert sediment storage into a porous-bed elevation change

Water discharge and sediment transport are related but distinct fluxes. A river can carry dissolved material, suspended particles and bed load. Competence concerns sizes that flow can move, whereas capacity concerns the amount transported under stated conditions. Cohesion, grain size, sorting and available supply complicate a simple faster-flow narrative.

Learning outcome: Compare equal large fluxes with a positive and negative imbalance. Keep solid and bulk units in every row, then state how bank erosion or changing porosity would alter the balance.

Starting recap

Preserve flux, storage, geometry and source boundaries. Distinguish actual discharge records from original process models and conditional interpretations.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Solid input 300 and output 100 m³/year give +200 m³ solids/year. Bulk bed volume increases by 333.333 m³/year and mean bed elevation by 1/3 m/year. Neither 200 m nor 0.2 m is the correct porous-bed result.

Predict

Can a reach carry a large sediment load while its net bed storage remains unchanged?

Convert a solid-sediment imbalance into porous bed-volume change

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original100 m by10 m reach, bed porosity0.4. Uniform bed-elevation change=(solid input−output)/[(1−porosity)×1000]. No bank/lateral flux, compaction or changing reach area. Positive is aggradation, negative degradation.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Bed elevation responds to the difference between solid supply and export, not either flux alone.

A reach can transport much sediment with no net aggradation. Channel bars, floodplains and banks exchange material beyond this simplified boundary; changes in sorting, porosity and reach geometry require additional observations.

Understand

1. Define the process and evidence

2. Connect mechanism and boundary

The original reach is 100 m long and 10 m wide. Inputs and outputs are volumes of solid grains, while bed geometry includes pore space. With bed porosity 0.4, a solid storage change ΔVs corresponds to bulk change ΔVs/0.6 and uniform elevation change ΔVs/(0.6×1000). Applying porosity twice or omitting it confuses solid and bulk volume.

If input equals output, storage is unchanged even if both fluxes are large. Greater input than output aggrades the bed; the reverse degrades it. This boundary excludes bank erosion, tributary/lateral supply and compaction. A real reach may change width or exchange sediment with a floodplain rather than raising its bed uniformly.

Meandering channels can erode outer banks and deposit point bars while transporting sediment downstream. Floodplain deposition, channel migration and abandoned bends reflect spatial redistribution over longer intervals. A local bar is not automatically proof that an entire watershed is gaining sediment. The action is to define the control volume and follow the grain budget across scales.

3. Reconstruct the worked packet

Solid input 300 and output 100 m³/year give +200 m³ solids/year. Bulk bed volume increases by 333.333 m³/year and mean bed elevation by 1/3 m/year. Neither 200 m nor 0.2 m is the correct porous-bed result.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can a reach carry a large sediment load while its net bed storage remains unchanged?

Compare equal large fluxes with a positive and negative imbalance. Keep solid and bulk units in every row, then state how bank erosion or changing porosity would alter the balance.

5. Test a changed case

Apply the evidence to a changed case

Input 100 and output 300 m³ solids/year give what bed change?

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

Storage is −200 m³ solids/year, bulk volume −333.333 m³/year and uniform elevation −1/3 m/year: degradation under the stated fixed-area boundary.

6. Retain a defensible process notebook

Preserve first predictions, complete source/units, geometry, flux and storage boundaries, calculations and competing interpretations. Only the explicitly labeled USGS discharge archive is actual measured-derived source data; all other numerical packets and diagrams are invented. Public practice does not certify independent reasoning, actual field competence or a safe environmental decision.

Mechanism or dataset reference, checked 30 October 2026. Original prose, calculations, diagrams and questions; source observations retain agency and provenance.

Apply

Porosity is needed here because:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Input 100 and output 300 m³ solids/year give what bed change?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
