Track a coastal sediment cell before calling redistribution a loss

Waves approaching obliquely can drive longshore transport, while rivers supply sediment and offshore pathways remove or temporarily store it. Beaches, spits and bars are parts of a connected sediment system. A change at one beach does not necessarily equal the net change of the whole coastal cell.

Learning outcome: Change river supply and alongshore export separately. Close the bulk-volume ledger and convert to equivalent width only after stating the fixed profile. Reclassify an offshore bar as inside versus outside the boundary and explain the changed accounting.

Starting recap

Preserve flux, storage, geometry and source boundaries. Distinguish actual discharge records from original process models and conditional interpretations.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

River input 2000, longshore input 3000, longshore export 4000 and offshore export 1000 sum to zero storage change. Large active transport coexists with zero net cell gain; it does not mean every beach point is stationary.

Predict

Can one beach retreat while the whole sediment cell has zero net storage change?

Separate redistribution within a sediment cell from net loss

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original coastal cell: longshore import3000, offshore export1000, river inputa and longshore exportb m³/year. Net bulk volume=a+2000−b. Uniform beach length1000 m and active profile height10 m convert volume to width change. Fixed geometry, no porosity conversion or sea-level rule.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A coastal cell can redistribute sediment internally without losing the same amount across its outer boundary.

Spits, bars and beaches respond to transport gradients and wave conditions. A temporary offshore bar inside the chosen cell is storage, not necessarily permanent export. The equivalent-width conversion assumes fixed geometry and is not a shoreline forecast.

Understand

1. Define the process and evidence

Waves approaching obliquely can drive longshore transport, while rivers supply sediment and offshore pathways remove or temporarily store it. Beaches, spits and bars are parts of a connected sediment system. A change at one beach does not necessarily equal the net change of the whole coastal cell.

2. Connect mechanism and boundary

The original cell receives river input a and longshore input 3000 m³/year, exports b alongshore and 1000 offshore. All quantities are bulk sediment volume, so net storage is a+2000−b. No extra porosity conversion is needed because the fluxes already share the same bulk-volume convention.

A uniform beach length 1000 m and active profile height 10 m convert a net volume into an equivalent width change by dividing by 10000 m². This simple geometric conversion is not the Bruun rule and does not model a changing profile or sea level. It is a transparent way to show what additional shape assumptions are needed to translate a budget into a shoreline-like distance.

A storm-built bar inside the chosen cell is internal storage, whereas export beyond the boundary is a loss from that cell. Groynes or other structures can redistribute alongshore supply and affect neighboring segments; a local gain is not necessarily a regional gain. Actual interventions require site evidence, ecological and downstream consequences, not just a favorable ledger.

3. Reconstruct the worked packet

River input 2000, longshore input 3000, longshore export 4000 and offshore export 1000 sum to zero storage change. Large active transport coexists with zero net cell gain; it does not mean every beach point is stationary.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can one beach retreat while the whole sediment cell has zero net storage change?

Change river supply and alongshore export separately. Close the bulk-volume ledger and convert to equivalent width only after stating the fixed profile. Reclassify an offshore bar as inside versus outside the boundary and explain the changed accounting.

5. Test a changed case

Apply the evidence to a changed case

With river input 0 and longshore export 5000 m³/year, find storage and equivalent width change.

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

Net is 0+2000−5000=−3000 m³/year; equivalent width change is −0.3 m/year under the fixed profile. It is not a measured or predicted shoreline retreat for a named beach.

6. Retain a defensible process notebook

Preserve first predictions, complete source/units, geometry, flux and storage boundaries, calculations and competing interpretations. Only the explicitly labeled USGS discharge archive is actual measured-derived source data; all other numerical packets and diagrams are invented. Public practice does not certify independent reasoning, actual field competence or a safe environmental decision.

Mechanism or dataset reference, checked 30 October 2026. Original prose, calculations, diagrams and questions; source observations retain agency and provenance.

Apply

An offshore bar counts as net cell export only when:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

With river input 0 and longshore export 5000 m³/year, find storage and equivalent width change.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
