SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Establish stratigraphic facing before applying superposition

A vertical sequence is not automatically a chronological sequence. Superposition orders sedimentary layers at deposition, but later overturning can place an older bed physically above a younger one. Original horizontality helps reconstruct deformation; it does not promise that present layers remain horizontal or upright.

Learning outcome: Toggle orientation while retaining facing, then conceal facing. Draw the current bed positions and the independently observed younging arrow. Explain which chronological claim becomes underdetermined when the arrow is removed.

Starting recap

Distinguish present position, relative event order, numerical age and duration. Preserve calibrated ranges, clock assumptions and missing observations instead of forcing one history.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

In the overturned view, current bottom-to-top beds are D,C,B,A. Downward fining identifies downward younging; oldest-to-youngest remains A,B,C,D. Without the facing record, the position of A at the top does not prove it is youngest.

Open the experiment

Predict

What observation would distinguish an upright package from an overturned one without relying on bed labels?

Separate present vertical position from depositional younging

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Invented four-bed instructional section. Original depositional order A,B,C,D from oldest to youngest; overturning reverses current vertical order without fault repetition. Graded beds are stipulated to fine toward original tops. With facing hidden, both upright and overturned histories remain possible; no actual mapped outcrop.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

An overturned package reverses vertical position, not the sequence in which its beds formed.

Original horizontality and superposition apply at deposition; tectonic rotation, faults and erosion must be evaluated separately. The generator setting is not independent observational evidence.

These are invented observation packets and calculations, not mapped field records or laboratory isotope measurements. Retain the source assumptions and first reasoning separately from public feedback.

Understand

1. Define the time interpretation

A vertical sequence is not automatically a chronological sequence. Superposition orders sedimentary layers at deposition, but later overturning can place an older bed physically above a younger one. Original horizontality helps reconstruct deformation; it does not promise that present layers remain horizontal or upright.

2. Connect observations, mechanism and assumptions

The invented teaching section has four beds A through D, deposited in that order. Rotation reverses their current bottom-to-top order without changing their depositional ages. The separate facing observation stipulates beds grading from coarser bases toward finer original tops. Read that internal direction before assigning younging from elevation.

With facing concealed, the visible bed positions admit both upright and overturned interpretations. With facing shown, upward fining supports younging upward and downward fining supports an overturned package under this packet’s simple depositional assumptions. Actual graded beds can have complexities, and fault repetition or erosion would require more observations.

The diagram is an original fictional observation exercise, not a photographed or surveyed outcrop. The generator knows the initial sequence, but that hidden information must not be used as if it were independent field evidence. Keep stipulated truth, visible observation and supported inference in separate notebook columns.

3. Reconstruct the worked packet

In the overturned view, current bottom-to-top beds are D,C,B,A. Downward fining identifies downward younging; oldest-to-youngest remains A,B,C,D. Without the facing record, the position of A at the top does not prove it is youngest.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: What observation would distinguish an upright package from an overturned one without relying on bed labels?

Toggle orientation while retaining facing, then conceal facing. Draw the current bed positions and the independently observed younging arrow. Explain which chronological claim becomes underdetermined when the arrow is removed.

5. Test a changed case

Apply the evidence to a changed case

The current bottom-to-top order is D,C,B,A and the supplied beds fine downward. Which bed is youngest, and which inference fails if facing is unknown?

Retain the chronology, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

D is youngest under the stipulated normal grading. With facing unknown, vertical order alone cannot distinguish upright from overturned deposition; the hidden generator order is not evidence.

6. Retain a defensible observation notebook

Preserve the original prediction, complete observations/relationships, calculations, uncertainty convention and rejected alternative. All sections and isotope packets here are invented instructional cases, not actual mapped outcrops or measured isotope analyses. Public practice is not independent reasoning review or supervised field competence.

Apply

In an overturned sequence, superposition should be applied to:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

The current bottom-to-top order is D,C,B,A and the supplied beds fine downward. Which bed is youngest, and which inference fails if facing is unknown?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
