Separate an antiform from an anticline using facing evidence

Fold names can encode different kinds of evidence. An antiform is arch-like in cross-section and a synform is trough-like. An anticline has older material toward its core and a syncline younger material toward its core. Shape and age classification agree in many upright examples, but cannot be treated as synonyms without facing evidence.

Learning outcome: Hold the arch/trough shape fixed while changing the independently supplied facing. Record shape, oldest/youngest core and classification separately. Explain how a concealed younging indicator limits the conclusion.

Starting recap

Keep map geometry, relative displacement, source magnitude and conditional hazard evidence distinct. A model probability is not a deterministic forecast.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Choose antiform shape with inverted facing: the arch contains youngest unit C toward its core and is a syncline. Restoring upright facing makes the same arch an anticline with oldest A toward the core.

Predict

Which additional observation is needed to turn a shape label into an age-core classification?

Separate fold shape from stratigraphic age at the core

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original ideal symmetric three-unit folded packet, known ages A oldest, B middle, C youngest. Facing independently supplied. Antiform/synform describe shape; anticline/syncline describe older/younger core. No fault repetition, complex refolding or missing units in this schematic.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Fold shape alone does not establish whether the core is older or younger.

Antiform and synform are geometric descriptions. Anticline and syncline require age/younging evidence; an inverted antiform can be a syncline. Real overturned limbs and refolding need more local facing observations than this binary packet.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

1. Define the evidence and convention

Fold names can encode different kinds of evidence. An antiform is arch-like in cross-section and a synform is trough-like. An anticline has older material toward its core and a syncline younger material toward its core. Shape and age classification agree in many upright examples, but cannot be treated as synonyms without facing evidence.

2. Connect mechanism and model

The original packet has three units with independently established ages A oldest, B intermediate and C youngest. In the upright antiform, A lies toward the core; in the upright synform, C does. Inverting the stratigraphic facing reverses the age interpretation without requiring the visible arch or trough to change shape.

An inverted antiform can therefore be a syncline, and an inverted synform can be an anticline. This ideal comparison omits fault repetition, erosion of key units and multiple folding phases. A real fold may have one overturned limb and require local younging observations rather than one global upright/inverted switch.

Graded bedding, cross-bedding and other primary structures can provide facing evidence when their depositional interpretation is justified. Axial surfaces, hinge directions and limb dips characterize geometry; they do not by themselves supply a calibrated age. Keep the source of the age order separate from the drawn curve.

3. Reconstruct the worked packet

Choose antiform shape with inverted facing: the arch contains youngest unit C toward its core and is a syncline. Restoring upright facing makes the same arch an anticline with oldest A toward the core.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Which additional observation is needed to turn a shape label into an age-core classification?

Hold the arch/trough shape fixed while changing the independently supplied facing. Record shape, oldest/youngest core and classification separately. Explain how a concealed younging indicator limits the conclusion.

5. Test a changed case

Apply the evidence to a changed case

An inverted synform has which age-core classification?

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

It has oldest unit A toward the core and is an anticline despite its trough-like synform shape. The conclusion depends on the independently supplied age order and inverted facing.

6. Retain a defensible evidence notebook

Preserve first predictions, map orientation, intermediate calculations, units, assumptions and alternatives. These maps, numerical packets and diagrams are original invented instructional cases, not surveyed sites or current hazard forecasts. Independent practical review and genuinely unfamiliar evidence remain separate learner gates.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
