SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend the full geological evidence portfolio and its remaining gates

A defensible environmental conclusion connects geological history, pathways and consequences without collapsing them into one number. The fictional site report claims that a lower downstream concentration proves lower tracer transport. Test that statement with an explicit confluence boundary rather than importing an unrelated actual stream measurement or relying on a qualitative dilution story.

Learning outcome: Preserve the source-versus-synthetic declaration and calculate both load and concentration before reading feedback. Vary water and concentration separately, check the one-hour unit conversion and state which missing field observations would invalidate complete conservative mixing.

Starting recap

Connect diagnostic materials, chronology, mapped geometry, actual source audits, surface budgets and environmental alternatives. Conditional teaching results do not certify actual site suitability.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At tributary flow 2 m³/s and concentration 0.2 mg/L, loads are 0.1 and 0.4 g/s, total 0.5 g/s. Combined flow 7 m³/s gives concentration 1/14≈0.0714286 mg/L and one-hour transport 1.8 kg. Concentration is below the tributary value, but load is five times the upstream load.

Predict

Can mixing reduce a tributary concentration while increasing the total mass transported past the downstream boundary?

Defend a concentration claim with a complete confluence load budget

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original conservative tracer site: upstream flow 5 m³/s and concentration 0.02 mg/L; tributary a,b. Complete instantaneous mixing with no storage, reaction or additional flux. Q[m³/s]×C[mg/L] gives g/s after unit conversion. Teaching comparison concentration 0.06 mg/L is not a legal/ecological safety limit. Unrelated actual USGS archives must not be substituted as observations of this fictional site.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Dilution and load are different: mixing can lower a concentration while adding transported mass.

The mixed concentration is below the tributary concentration but total load exceeds upstream load. The comparison value is invented, not a health, legal or ecological threshold. Reaction, incomplete mixing, variable flow, storage and sampling uncertainty would require additional evidence.

Understand

Integrate evidence without erasing its origin

A defensible environmental conclusion connects geological history, pathways and consequences without collapsing them into one number. The fictional site report claims that a lower downstream concentration proves lower tracer transport. Test that statement with an explicit confluence boundary rather than importing an unrelated actual stream measurement or relying on a qualitative dilution story.

The upstream stream carries 5 m³/s at 0.02 mg/L and the tributary carries a m³/s at b mg/L. Multiplying m³/s by mg/L introduces 1000 L/m³ and then converts mg to g, so the numerical product gives g/s. Upstream load is 0.1 g/s; tributary load is ab; complete mixed concentration is (0.1+ab)/(5+a) mg/L. An hour carries 3.6 times the load in kilograms.

This boundary assumes a conservative tracer, constant simultaneous flows, complete mixing and no storage or additional pathways. Reaction with mineral surfaces, acid generation, groundwater exchange or changing sediment transport would require additional terms and observations. The model asks what follows from the supplied data, not whether the river is safe or whether a real intervention caused a change. The comparison 0.06 mg/L is an invented teaching value with no regulatory or ecological status.

The final portfolio must connect all six capability clusters: diagnostic materials, chronology with isotope assumptions, plate/interior evidence, mapped deformation and conditional hazards, surface flux/storage processes, and resource/environmental alternatives. Each connection needs an actual retained action and changed-case explanation, not just a title or completion checkbox. Public solutions remain practice exposure, not independent evidence of mastery.

Reconstruct the worked packet

At tributary flow 2 m³/s and concentration 0.2 mg/L, loads are 0.1 and 0.4 g/s, total 0.5 g/s. Combined flow 7 m³/s gives concentration 1/14≈0.0714286 mg/L and one-hour transport 1.8 kg. Concentration is below the tributary value, but load is five times the upstream load.

Predict, investigate and retain

Predict first: Can mixing reduce a tributary concentration while increasing the total mass transported past the downstream boundary?

Preserve the source-versus-synthetic declaration and calculate both load and concentration before reading feedback. Vary water and concentration separately, check the one-hour unit conversion and state which missing field observations would invalidate complete conservative mixing.

Apply the evidence to a changed case

At tributary flow 3 m³/s and concentration 0.1 mg/L, compare total load and mixed concentration with the worked case.

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

Total load is 0.4 g/s; combined flow is 8 m³/s; concentration is 0.05 mg/L and one-hour transport 1.44 kg. Both decrease relative to the worked packet, but load is still four times upstream-only 0.1 g/s. Being below the fictional comparison does not establish any real safety threshold.

Mechanism context, checked 30 October 2026. All numerical and site-history packets here are original invented cases.

Submit the complete supplied-observation notebook

Use the Physical Geology and Earth Systems evidence workspace. Preserve:

  • First observations and predictions for every category, with source identity, assistance and public-feedback exposure. Do not rewrite a copied answer as a first independent response.
  • A diagnostic material comparison and conserved composition or reaction budget; a relative chronology and isotope calculation with inherited/lost material alternatives.
  • A mapped site history using the original cumulative section, strike/dip frame and explicit unknowns; compare a tectonic/interior constraint without assuming one observation uniquely determines structure.
  • The actual USGS seismic packet audit (event identity, preferred origin, phase/station selection, raw values and residual meaning) and actual discharge audit (station, dates, daily-mean statistic, approval flags, raw units and integrated volume). Retain original source files and reuse/provenance information. These archives are separate places and processes, not measurements of the fictional site.
  • A surface-process flux/storage budget and resource/environmental alternative with competing mechanisms, scenario constraints, uncertainty and an explicit stopping condition. Hazard probability, exposure and consequence must remain distinct.
  • A frozen first full-course report, substantive criterion-linked human critique, one justified revision and a genuinely unfamiliar reviewer-assigned packet with a new first response. Retain earlier reports and exposed solutions rather than deleting them.

The existing workspace retains versioned tasks, original responses, exposure and report/review history. It records declarations but cannot itself verify that a reviewer is independent, a transfer case is genuinely unfamiliar or fieldwork was performed.

Separate authored scope from learner and practical completion

The course supplies all 56 planned teaching destinations and a supplied-observation pathway. A completed reading checklist is not proof of independent geological reasoning, actual field competence, institutional credit or professional authorization. A reviewer must assess the actual notebook, source audits, unfamiliar response and revision.

If the learner selects a real field pathway, access permissions, qualified supervision, local hazards and appropriate equipment/training must be handled outside this virtual course. No entering mines, unstable slopes, floodwater or volcanic areas is requested. A supplied-record notebook cannot be mislabeled an actual field survey or a safety clearance. Missing source analysis or independent review remains an unmet learner gate, even when all public calculations are correct.

Apply

Which statement is justified for the worked 2 m³/s,0.2 mg/L tributary?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At tributary flow 3 m³/s and concentration 0.1 mg/L, compare total load and mixed concentration with the worked case.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
