Separate pressure-storage release from water-table drainage

An aquifer’s head can fall without the same physical process occurring everywhere. In an unconfined aquifer, a falling water table can drain connected pore space. In a confined aquifer that remains saturated, pressure decline releases water through compressibility of water and deformation of the porous skeleton.

Learning outcome: Hold area and decline fixed while switching the storage boundary. Calculate both released volumes and explain the physical mechanism. List evidence needed to distinguish storage depletion from a continuing renewable inflow.

Starting recap

Preserve flux, storage, geometry and source boundaries. Distinguish actual discharge records from original process models and conditional interpretations.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

A 2 m decline over 1 million m² releases 2000 m³ at confined storativity 0.001, versus 400000 m³ at specific yield 0.2. The 200-fold ratio comes from the supplied coefficients, not a universal ratio between aquifer types.

Predict

Does a confined head decline necessarily expose empty pore space above a falling water table?

Distinguish confined pressure release from water-table drainage

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original uniform aquifer plan area1 km². Confined storativity0.001; unconfined specific yield0.2. Released water=coefficient×area×head decline. Small confined change keeps aquifer saturated; unconfined change drains connected pore space. No leakage, recharge or sustainable yield estimate.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

The same head decline can release very different volumes under different storage boundaries.

Confined storativity and unconfined specific yield represent different processes. Released storage is depletion, not proof of renewable yield. Subsidence, delayed drainage and leakage require extra evidence and are not calculated.

Understand

1. Define the process and evidence

An aquifer’s head can fall without the same physical process occurring everywhere. In an unconfined aquifer, a falling water table can drain connected pore space. In a confined aquifer that remains saturated, pressure decline releases water through compressibility of water and deformation of the porous skeleton.

2. Connect mechanism and boundary

The original plan area is 1 km². A confined storativity of 0.001 or unconfined specific yield of 0.2 multiplies area and uniform head decline to estimate released water. Both coefficients are dimensionless in this simplified areal balance, but they represent different processes and are not interchangeable labels for total porosity.

For the same head decline, the unconfined packet releases much more water because the stipulated storage coefficient is larger. This does not mean the confined aquifer is empty or that every pore drains in the unconfined case. Capillary retention, delayed drainage, leakage and spatially variable properties complicate actual storage estimates.

Water withdrawn from storage is depletion over the chosen interval, not evidence of a sustainable recharge rate. Subsidence or ecological impacts require additional observations and models. No well construction, pumping plan or groundwater allocation is implied by this bounded comparison.

3. Reconstruct the worked packet

A 2 m decline over 1 million m² releases 2000 m³ at confined storativity 0.001, versus 400000 m³ at specific yield 0.2. The 200-fold ratio comes from the supplied coefficients, not a universal ratio between aquifer types.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does a confined head decline necessarily expose empty pore space above a falling water table?

Hold area and decline fixed while switching the storage boundary. Calculate both released volumes and explain the physical mechanism. List evidence needed to distinguish storage depletion from a continuing renewable inflow.

5. Test a changed case

Apply the evidence to a changed case

For a 5 m decline in the confined packet, how much water is released?

Retain the evidence frame, calculations and assumptions before opening public feedback.

Compare a worked response

0.001×1000000×5=5000 m³. Saturation is retained by assumption; this value does not determine the safe or sustainable pumping rate.

6. Retain a defensible process notebook

Preserve first predictions, complete source/units, geometry, flux and storage boundaries, calculations and competing interpretations. Only the explicitly labeled USGS discharge archive is actual measured-derived source data; all other numerical packets and diagrams are invented. Public practice does not certify independent reasoning, actual field competence or a safe environmental decision.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
