Distinguish balanced mutation flows from no mutation

Mutation creates sequence changes without being directed toward an organism’s future needs. Some changes are neutral in a particular context; others affect contribution to future generations. Mutation and selection are distinct processes, so a useful mutation’s spread does not establish that environmental need caused its origin.

Learning outcome: Compare u0.04/v0.01 with equal0.02 rates. Record first-generation flows, balance and generation40 value. Explain why stable frequency is not evidence that the mutation mechanism has stopped.

Starting recap

Distinguish population mechanisms using explicit allele, genotype, life-cycle and sampling denominators; compare conditional explanations and independent falsifying evidence.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Illustratively large mutation probabilities make the deterministic mechanism visible; they are not empirical rates. Start p(A)=0.8; p′=p(1−u)+(1−p)v; no other evolutionary force.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Opposing mutation flows can balance while conversions continue in both directions.

At p*=v/(u+v),pu=(1−p)v. Mutation is not generated because an organism needs a useful trait. This isolated model omits selection and drift, and its visible probabilities are not measured natural mutation rates.

Understand

1. Orient: Distinguish balanced mutation flows from no mutation

Mutation creates sequence changes without being directed toward an organism’s future needs. Some changes are neutral in a particular context; others affect contribution to future generations. Mutation and selection are distinct processes, so a useful mutation’s spread does not establish that environmental need caused its origin.

2. Explain the population mechanism

Let u be the probability an A copy becomes a and v the probability an a copy becomes A during the modeled generation. Starting at frequency p, forward loss is pu and reverse gain is(1−p)v. Thus p′=p(1−u)+(1−p)v. The displayed probabilities are deliberately large for visible teaching trajectories, not measured natural mutation rates.

At balance, pu=(1−p)v, giving p=v/(u+v). Both flows continue at balance; their equality makes net change zero. The deviation obeys p′−p=(1−u−v)(p−p*), so the supported parameters approach the balance monotonically rather than overshooting.

The model excludes drift, selection, migration, multiple alleles and context-dependent mutation. A real stable frequency does not prove mutation balance, and a finite trajectory near a value is not exact equilibrium. Independent rate estimates and alternative models are needed to interpret a population observation.

3. Work a complete evidence calculation

At p0.8,u0.04,v0.01, forward loss0.032 and reverse gain0.002 give p′0.770. Balance p*=0.01/0.05=0.2, with equal ongoing flows0.008 in each direction.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can an allele frequency remain constant while individual sequence copies continue changing?

Compare u0.04/v0.01 with equal0.02 rates. Record first-generation flows, balance and generation40 value. Explain why stable frequency is not evidence that the mutation mechanism has stopped.

Retain the original population definition, first prediction, controls and full numerical ledger, including conflicting or null results. These are original bounded teaching calculations, not measured populations.

5. Transfer and explain

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

For p0.6,u0.03,v0.02, calculate the next frequency and balance.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

p′=0.6×0.97+0.4×0.02=0.590. Balance0.02/0.05=0.4. Current forward0.018 exceeds reverse0.008, so p decreases by0.01.

6. Reflect and retain evidence

State a competing mechanism, an observation that would distinguish it, and a limitation of the supplied sampling or life-cycle model. Preserve first reasoning and a criterion-linked human review in the General Biology II workspace. Public practice feedback and simulated evidence do not certify an independently demonstrated comparative argument, field investigation or practical skill.

Supporting scientific reference, checked 30 October 2026. All prose, numerical packets and diagrams are original. No organism collection, culture, breeding, release, personal genetic inference or clinical procedure is requested.

Apply

At mutation balance, which statement is justified?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

For p0.6,u0.03,v0.02, calculate the next frequency and balance.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
