Relate plant tissue roles to a growing stem cross-section

Plant organs integrate dermal, ground and vascular tissues. Dermal tissues provide interfaces and protection; ground tissues include photosynthetic, storage and supporting cells; vascular tissues transport water/minerals and organic solutes. Roots, stems and leaves arrange these tissues differently rather than functioning as interchangeable cylinders.

Learning outcome: Compare initial radii 2 and 6 mm at thickness 0.4 mm. Reconstruct both annulus areas and explain why the cambium, phloem and older wood cannot be treated as one equally conducting tissue.

Starting recap

Connect plant tissues, transport, developmental signals and reproductive origins to complete quantitative evidence with explicit resource and model boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At initial radius 4 mm and added thickness 0.4 mm, initial area is 16π ≈ 50.27 mm². New xylem area is 3.36π ≈ 10.56 mm², a 21% increase in this ideal cross-section.

Predict

Would the same ring thickness add the same cross-sectional area around a small and a large stem?

Reconstruct a secondary-xylem cross-section increment

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Ideal circular existing wood plus an outer secondary-xylem annulus. Bark/phloem/cambium thickness excluded; area does not imply every cell conducts. New xylem formed toward inside of outward-moving vascular cambium.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Equal ring thickness adds more cross-sectional material around a larger existing radius.

Vascular cambium adds secondary xylem inward and phloem outward; cork cambium contributes protective tissues. This ideal wood-area increment does not date a real tree or imply equal conductivity across all older wood.

Dashed: previous wood boundary; solid: new boundary

Cross-section area model only. Bark, phloem and cambium thickness are omitted; not all wood is equally conductive.

Understand

1. Orient: Relate plant tissue roles to a growing stem cross-section

Plant organs integrate dermal, ground and vascular tissues. Dermal tissues provide interfaces and protection; ground tissues include photosynthetic, storage and supporting cells; vascular tissues transport water/minerals and organic solutes. Roots, stems and leaves arrange these tissues differently rather than functioning as interchangeable cylinders.

2. Connect plant structure and mechanism

Apical meristems support primary length growth. In plants with secondary growth, vascular cambium adds secondary xylem toward the inside and secondary phloem toward the outside; cork cambium contributes protective tissues. Much conducting xylem consists of mature dead cells with reinforced walls, whereas phloem transport depends on living cellular organization. Different tissue mechanisms therefore coexist in one stem.

The original cross-section model treats existing wood as a circle of radius r and newly added xylem as an outer annulus of thickness d. New area is π[(r+d)²−r²] = π(2rd+d²). The annulus lies just inside an outward-shifting cambium; bark and phloem thickness are excluded. Equal thickness does not mean equal added material at different initial radii.

Older wood is not uniformly active conducting tissue, and a real growth ring can vary with anatomy and environment. The model neither dates a tree nor converts area directly into water flow or biomass. Use actual tissue identification and appropriate density/conductivity evidence for those further claims.

3. Work a complete evidence example

At initial radius 4 mm and added thickness 0.4 mm, initial area is 16π ≈ 50.27 mm². New xylem area is 3.36π ≈ 10.56 mm², a 21% increase in this ideal cross-section.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Would the same ring thickness add the same cross-sectional area around a small and a large stem?

Compare initial radii 2 and 6 mm at thickness 0.4 mm. Reconstruct both annulus areas and explain why the cambium, phloem and older wood cannot be treated as one equally conducting tissue.

Retain the original first prediction, stated controls, complete ledger and a conflicting or null comparison. Original supplied calculations are not measured plant specimens or completed practical work.

5. Transfer to a changed plant case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

For radius 3 mm and thickness 1 mm, calculate initial area, added area and fractional area increase.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Initial area 9π; final 16π; added 7π ≈ 21.99 mm². Fractional increase 7/9 ≈ 0.7778. The geometry does not imply a matching percentage increase in hydraulic function.

6. Reflect and defend a bounded conclusion

Connect a tissue or developmental mechanism to the evidence, identify an omitted alternative and propose an independent discriminating observation. Preserve a first report and human critique in the General Biology II workspace. Public practice does not establish independently assessed practical skill, and these conceptual models do not prescribe hormone, fertilizer or field interventions.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
