SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Defend a population-change explanation with an auditable evidence chain

The course culminates in an argument that links population change to organismal and environmental evidence without overstating what was measured. Begin with the sampling frame, record identities and biological stage. Then separate source observations, justified corrections, model calculations and causal interpretation. A corrected numerical result is not automatically a complete mechanism.

Learning outcome: Compare detection 0.5, 0.75 and 1 at true treatment change +10. Retain both individual site records and all means. Write two distinct biological explanations consistent with the adjusted change, then identify independent physiological, resource or demographic evidence that would favor one.

Starting recap

Defend a cross-scale population explanation by preserving lineage, contribution, movement, detection, organismal mechanism and ecosystem boundaries.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With a true treatment change +5 and detection 0.5, treatment after abundances 30 and 40 generate expected records 15 and 20. Their observed mean 17.5 yields raw contrast 17.5−25−5 = −12.5. Detection adjustment gives true after mean 35 and contrast +5. A negative raw record contrast can conceal a positive true effect.

Could a change in detection reverse the apparent sign of a reference-adjusted population change?

Reconcile a source packet before defending a recovery mechanism

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Four fictional sites T1/T2/C1/C2 with true before20/30/40/50. Common true trend+5; only treatments add a. Before and comparison detection1; treatment after detection b. Values are expectations, not integer captures. Difference-in-differences needs both justified detection and counterfactual trend assumptions.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A change in detection can reverse the apparent sign of a recovery contrast.

Dividing by detection is justified only because the probability is independently stipulated here. Actual sampling requires calibrated detection, independent sites and a defensible common-trend counterfactual. The packet does not identify whether nutrients, water, behavior or survival caused a true change.

Understand

1. Define the cross-scale claim

2. Reconstruct the complete evidence chain

The fictional four sites have true before abundances T1=20,T2=30,C1=40,C2=50. Every site experiences a common change of +5; treatments have an additional change a. Before and comparison detection are perfect in the packet, but treatment after-detection is b. Expected detected after records are therefore b(25+a) and b(35+a) for treatments, versus 45 and 55 for comparisons.

Treatment before mean is 25 and comparison change is 5. The raw difference-in-changes is b(30+a)−30. Dividing the treatment after mean by the independently stipulated b recovers the true contrast a. This adjustment is justified here only because detection is supplied; estimating b from the same preferred outcome would be circular. Even a corrected contrast still relies on the common-trend counterfactual.

Now connect all six modules: compare evolutionary and migration alternatives; audit lineage/character and detection evidence; test microbial carbon/nitrogen mechanisms; examine plant tissue, water and reproduction boundaries; compare animal transport, regulation and developmental stages; then reconstruct demographic, community and ecosystem consequences. Do not force every mechanism to be causal. A strong report rejects unsupported links, states which evidence would discriminate them, preserves first reasoning and incorporates substantive human critique before an unfamiliar transfer.

3. Audit a worked original packet

4. Predict, compare and reject an explanation

Predict first: Could a change in detection reverse the apparent sign of a reference-adjusted population change?

Compare detection 0.5, 0.75 and 1 at true treatment change +10. Retain both individual site records and all means. Write two distinct biological explanations consistent with the adjusted change, then identify independent physiological, resource or demographic evidence that would favor one.

5. Respond to an unfamiliar boundary

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

At true treatment change +10 and after-detection 0.75, reconstruct treatment after true/observed values and both contrasts.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

True treatments are 35 and 45, expected records 26.25 and 33.75, observed mean 30. Raw contrast 30−25−5 is zero. Dividing by 0.75 gives true mean 40 and adjusted contrast +10. Fractional records are expectations, not literal observed partial animals.

6. Preserve and defend independent reasoning

Use the General Biology II course workspace to retain a first cross-module report, criterion-linked human critique, justified revision and a reviewer-supplied new prompt/response. Separate authored coverage and public practice from actual supervised practical evidence, independently assessed reasoning and institutional equivalence. No organism handling, physiological intervention or field manipulation is requested.

Supporting method/mechanism reference, checked 30 October 2026. Original synthetic records and calculations, not a field study or copied source exercise.

Apply

A detection-adjusted contrast by itself identifies:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At true treatment change +10 and after-detection 0.75, reconstruct treatment after true/observed values and both contrasts.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
