Compare respiratory architectures through local exchange gradients

Gas exchange requires a thin effective interface and maintained gradients. Gills exchange with water, lungs exchange with air through internal surfaces, and insect tracheal systems deliver gases through branching air pathways near tissues. Ventilation moves the external medium; perfusion moves blood or other transport fluid. These are not interchangeable with diffusion across an interface.

Learning outcome: Trace both flow directions and compare adjacent points at k = 0.5 and 3. Reconstruct both outlet ledgers. Identify the pigment-binding or unequal-flow assumption that would need revision before applying this ideal model to a real gill.

Starting recap

Connect comparative animal structures and regulatory mechanisms to complete exchange, resource and signaling ledgers, preserving causal and practical limits.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At k = 2 and D = 100, countercurrent transfer is 66.667, leaving donor outlet 33.333. The local gradient is 33.333 throughout. Co-current transfer is about 49.084, leaving donor outlet 50.916. The countercurrent recipient outlet exceeds the donor outlet, but these outlets are at opposite ends.

Predict

Can the recipient outlet exceed the donor outlet while every local exchange still follows a downhill gradient?

Compare equal-capacity exchange arrangements

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Ideal linear dissolved-gas coordinate, equal stream capacity rates, recipient inlet 0, constant transfer coefficient, no binding/nonlinear solubility. Co-current effectiveness (1−exp(−2k))/2; countercurrent k/(1+k). This is a comparative exchanger, not a measured gill or lung.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Countercurrent streams can maintain a positive local gradient along the exchange path.

Compare adjacent positions, not opposite-end outlets. The recipient outlet can exceed the donor outlet without local uphill diffusion. Equal-capacity linear assumptions omit pigment binding and changing ventilation/perfusion.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

1. Orient: Compare respiratory architectures through local exchange gradients

2. Connect comparative structure and mechanism

Countercurrent flow in many fish gills places water and blood in opposite directions, helping preserve a local oxygen gradient. A co-current arrangement brings streams in the same direction and tends toward equal outlet coordinates. Bird airflow and mammalian tidal ventilation have different architectures again; the two-stream calculation is not a complete model of either lung.

To isolate geometry, use two equal-capacity streams, donor inlet coordinate D and recipient inlet zero. With dimensionless exchange strength k, supplied co-current effectiveness is (1−exp(−2k))/2 and countercurrent effectiveness is k/(1+k). Multiplying effectiveness by D gives recipient outlet; donor outlet is D minus that transfer. These linear dissolved-gas coordinates exclude binding, varying solubility and metabolic consumption.

The graph places x = 0 at the donor inlet and x = 1 at its outlet. Recipient flow runs from x = 1 toward x = 0. The ideal countercurrent donor curve is D[1+k(1−x)]/(1+k) and recipient curve is Dk(1−x)/(1+k), so the adjacent difference is D/(1+k), positive everywhere. Comparing opposite ends instead would falsely suggest uphill diffusion.

3. Reconstruct the worked evidence

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can the recipient outlet exceed the donor outlet while every local exchange still follows a downhill gradient?

Trace both flow directions and compare adjacent points at k = 0.5 and 3. Reconstruct both outlet ledgers. Identify the pigment-binding or unequal-flow assumption that would need revision before applying this ideal model to a real gill.

Retain the first prediction, complete ledger, stated controls and a conflicting or null comparison. These original supplied calculations are not measured animals or completed practical work.

5. Apply a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

For k = 1 and donor inlet 80, calculate countercurrent transfer, both outlets and the local gradient.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Transfer and recipient outlet are 40; donor outlet is 40; local gradient is 40. Equal numerical outlet values occur at opposite ends and do not mean the adjacent streams have no gradient.

6. Defend a bounded biological conclusion

Connect the mechanism to the evidence, identify an omitted alternative and propose an independent discriminating observation using provided or archived information only. Preserve first reasoning and human critique in the General Biology II workspace. Public practice does not establish independently assessed practical skill. No animal handling, physiological challenge, medical interpretation or intervention is requested.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

For k = 1 and donor inlet 80, calculate countercurrent transfer, both outlets and the local gradient.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.
