Close energy pathways while distinguishing cycling elements

Food webs include grazing and detrital pathways. Gross primary production is the rate of energy fixed into organic material; subtracting producer respiration gives net primary production. Standing biomass is a stock at a time, not that production rate, so a small rapidly renewing producer stock can support a substantial consumer flux.

Learning outcome: Compare consumption fractions 0.1 and 0.5 at the same producer respiration. Close all terminal pathways and identify which element fluxes would be internal versus external if the system boundary expanded from a plant patch to its watershed.

Starting recap

Connect behavioral mechanisms, demographic stages, community interactions and ecosystem budgets while preserving denominators, causal alternatives and external fieldwork gates.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At producer respiration 400, NPP is 600. Consumption fraction 0.3 gives 180 consumed and 420 producer detritus. Herbivore egestion is 108, respiration 36 and secondary production 36. The complete terminal budget is 400+420+108+36+36 = 1000; secondary production/NPP is 0.06.

Close producer and consumer energy pathways

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Gross primary production 1000; NPP=1000−producer respiration. Herbivore assimilation 40% of consumption; half assimilation respired, half secondary production. Unconsumed NPP enters declared detrital pathway. Not biomass stocks or a universal ten-percent rule.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Consumption, assimilation and production efficiencies are separate factors in a food-web budget.

Energy is transferred and dissipated as heat; chemical elements can cycle through reservoirs. A biomass stock is not a production rate, and detrital pathways remain part of the system rather than disappearing from the ledger.

Understand

1. Frame the biological question

Food webs include grazing and detrital pathways. Gross primary production is the rate of energy fixed into organic material; subtracting producer respiration gives net primary production. Standing biomass is a stock at a time, not that production rate, so a small rapidly renewing producer stock can support a substantial consumer flux.

2. Connect mechanisms and evidence

The original ledger fixes gross production at 1000 energy units per area per time. Producer respiration R leaves NPP = 1000−R. A fraction f is consumed by herbivores; the rest enters the declared producer-detrital pathway. Herbivores assimilate 40% of consumption and split that assimilation equally between respiration and secondary production.

Consumption efficiency, assimilation efficiency and production efficiency are different factors. Secondary production divided by NPP is f×0.4×0.5 = 0.2f, not a universal ten-percent constant. Herbivore egestion is 60% of consumption and remains in a detrital pathway. Adding producer respiration, producer detritus, herbivore egestion, herbivore respiration and secondary production recovers the original input.

Energy ultimately dissipates as heat, whereas carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and water move among reservoirs. Photosynthesis/respiration transfer carbon between inorganic and organic pools; fixation and denitrification connect nitrogen forms to the atmosphere; phosphorus often moves through weathering, uptake and sediment reservoirs without a comparably large gaseous cycle. Evaporation, condensation, precipitation and biological uptake move water. A flow diagram must distinguish internal recycling from external boundary inputs and outputs.

3. Reconstruct a worked comparison

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Does material not consumed by herbivores disappear from the ecosystem budget?

Compare consumption fractions 0.1 and 0.5 at the same producer respiration. Close all terminal pathways and identify which element fluxes would be internal versus external if the system boundary expanded from a plant patch to its watershed.

Retain the first prediction, controlled settings, complete ledgers and one conflicting or null comparison. These are original supplied calculations, not observed populations or completed fieldwork.

5. Transfer to a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

At producer respiration 200 and consumption fraction 0.5, calculate NPP, consumption, all terminal pathways and secondary/NPP efficiency.

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

NPP 800, consumption 400, producer detritus 400, herbivore egestion 240, respiration 80 and secondary production 80. Terminal terms 200+400+240+80+80 = 1000; efficiency 80/800 = 0.1, a result of these chosen fractions rather than a universal rule.

6. Defend a conditional conclusion

Separate mechanism, population pattern and causal evidence. Identify a missing biological process and an independent observation that could discriminate alternatives. Preserve first reasoning and substantive human critique in the General Biology II workspace. Use supplied or ethically archived information only; no animal manipulation, habitat intervention or organism release is requested.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
