SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Evaluate disturbance and recovery with a reference comparison

Disturbance can change species composition, resource availability and ecosystem processes. Primary succession begins where important biological legacies such as soil are absent or greatly reduced; secondary succession retains more of those legacies. Recovery need not follow one fixed sequence toward a single inevitable endpoint, because history, dispersal and altered conditions matter.

Learning outcome: Compare impact/reference changes 10/0, 10/10 and 10/−10. Retain raw before/after values and contrasts, then explain which independent sites and pre-trends are needed before using the contrast causally.

Starting recap

Connect behavioral mechanisms, demographic stages, community interactions and ecosystem budgets while preserving denominators, causal alternatives and external fieldwork gates.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With impact change −10 and reference change +10, after values are 30 and 60. The contrast is −20, not just the impact change −10. Reference evidence changes the question from what happened locally to how that change compares with another trend.

Predict

Can a positive local change still yield a negative reference-adjusted contrast?

Separate a before–after change from a reference trend

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original single-site means: impact before 40, reference before 50; after values add a and b. BACI-style contrast=(impact change)−(reference change). No variance, independent replicated sites or verified parallel-trend assumption; not causal proof of a restoration effect.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A reference trend can change the interpretation of an apparent before–after recovery.

A single impact and reference site do not establish independent treatment replication or parallel trends. Richness, species composition, productivity and recovery rate are distinct outcomes; a contrast requires uncertainty and alternative-explanation checks.

Understand

1. Frame the biological question

2. Connect mechanisms and evidence

Resistance describes how little an outcome changes during disturbance, whereas recovery rate concerns what happens afterward. Richness, composition, productivity and nutrient retention are different outcomes and may recover differently. Returning to the same species count does not prove recovery of the same species or functions.

The original before–after comparison starts impact-site response at 40 and reference at 50. After values are 40+a and 50+b, so the difference-in-changes contrast is a−b. A simple impact-site increase can look less favorable after accounting for a larger reference increase. The baseline difference does not itself prevent calculating the contrast, but causal interpretation needs a justified counterfactual trend.

One impact and one reference site lack independent treatment replication. Temporal subsamples do not automatically solve that limitation, and unrelated site-specific changes can mimic an effect. A defensible archived-data plan adds suitable independent sites, repeated pre-intervention trends, detection consistency and uncertainty, while preserving an alternative explanation rather than claiming a definitive restoration result.

3. Reconstruct a worked comparison

With impact change −10 and reference change +10, after values are 30 and 60. The contrast is −20, not just the impact change −10. Reference evidence changes the question from what happened locally to how that change compares with another trend.

4. Predict and investigate

Predict first: Can a positive local change still yield a negative reference-adjusted contrast?

Compare impact/reference changes 10/0, 10/10 and 10/−10. Retain raw before/after values and contrasts, then explain which independent sites and pre-trends are needed before using the contrast causally.

Retain the first prediction, controlled settings, complete ledgers and one conflicting or null comparison. These are original supplied calculations, not observed populations or completed fieldwork.

5. Transfer to a changed case

Apply the mechanism to a changed case

At impact change 0 and reference change −10, calculate all after values and the contrast; does this prove a treatment benefit?

Retain your calculation, units and assumptions in the lesson notebook before opening this public practice response.

Compare a worked response

Impact after 40, reference after 40, contrast 0−(−10) = +10. The favorable relative contrast does not prove treatment benefit without the counterfactual, replication and uncertainty evidence omitted from this packet.

6. Defend a conditional conclusion

Separate mechanism, population pattern and causal evidence. Identify a missing biological process and an independent observation that could discriminate alternatives. Preserve first reasoning and substantive human critique in the General Biology II workspace. Use supplied or ethically archived information only; no animal manipulation, habitat intervention or organism release is requested.

Supporting scientific reference, checked 30 October 2026. Original prose, models and packets; no source exercise or figure reproduced. Actual field sampling and independently assessed transfer remain separate evidence gates.

Apply

A favorable difference-in-changes alone establishes:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

At impact change 0 and reference change −10, calculate all after values and the contrast; does this prove a treatment benefit?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
