SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Assemble interaction energy without double counting

Distinguish system pair energy from source potential and self-energy.

Learning outcome: Predict all three signed terms for third charges −1, 0 and +1 nC before checking. Double all separations at fixed charges. Compare sequential assembly in a different order and explain why total work stays fixed while intermediate work changes.

Starting recap

Keep source normalization, potential reference, signed energy and evidence independence explicit.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Charges +2, −1 and +1 nC occupy (0,0), (1,0) and (0,1) m. In nJ, the three terms are −2k×10⁻⁹, +2k×10⁻⁹ and −k×10⁻⁹/sqrt(2). The total is approximately −6.35516 nJ; the first two cancel, not the third.

Why does summing each charge times the potential of all other charges require a factor of one half?

Each unordered pair enters once; adding each charge times all other-source potential would count twice.

The sequential assembly first creates pair 12, then adding charge 3 supplies pairs 13 and 23. Reference zero is the infinitely separated configuration; negative final interaction energy does not mean negative kinetic energy. The fixed source supports and quasistatic external agent are part of the stated account.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Define the assembly reference

For localized point charges, set interaction energy to zero when their pair separations are infinite. Bring charges in slowly with negligible final kinetic energy. The external work equals the change in interaction energy when no other energy transfer is included. Attraction can make that external work negative: the agent removes energy rather than supplies it.

Count each interaction once

Bringing in charge 1 costs no interaction energy with other charges yet. Charge 2 adds k q1 q2/r12. Charge 3 adds k q3(q1/r13 + q2/r23). Thus U = sum over i < j of k qi qj/rij. Alternatively U = (1/2) sum qi Vi, where Vi excludes the charge’s own potential. Omitting the half counts each pair twice; including self-potential of an ideal point charge introduces a singularity outside this model.

Separate source potential from pair energy

A single source charge produces V = kq/r relative to infinity. Multiple sources add as signed scalars, V = sum kqi/ri; no test-charge factor belongs in that source potential. For +2 nC and −1 nC each 1 m from an empty observation point, V = k(1 nC)/1 m ≈ 8.98755 V. Doubling only the negative source distance makes the result k(1.5 nC)/1 m ≈ 13.4813 V. A negative test charge then has negative potential energy at that point; it does not reverse the source potential.

Change geometry, not the reference

At fixed charges, uniform dilation by factor s divides every pair energy and the total by s. The total can vanish by cancellation even when individual pair forces and energies do not vanish. A zero system interaction energy does not imply every particle is at rest or every local electric field is zero.

Worked original case

Charges +2, −1 and +1 nC occupy (0,0), (1,0) and (0,1) m. In nJ, the three terms are −2k×10⁻⁹, +2k×10⁻⁹ and −k×10⁻⁹/sqrt(2). The total is approximately −6.35516 nJ; the first two cancel, not the third.

Investigation

Predict all three signed terms for third charges −1, 0 and +1 nC before checking. Double all separations at fixed charges. Compare sequential assembly in a different order and explain why total work stays fixed while intermediate work changes.

Changed-case practice

Try a new practice case

Keep the default charges but double the triangle leg length. What is total interaction energy in nJ?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the source integral, symmetry or charge boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original teaching and cases checked 30 October 2026 against the current official framework, Unit 9 and OpenStax electric potential. All records are supplied or generated, not measured by a learner. No physical charging, battery connection, high-voltage equipment or particle experiment is requested. Retain predictions, derivations and critique in the course evidence workspace; public feedback is not independent mastery or performed laboratory time.

Apply

Why does summing each charge times the potential of all other charges require a factor of one half?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which reference, source geometry or evidence-independence assumption limits your inference?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
