SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Distinguish an exact fit from independent electromagnetic evidence

For an initially zero-current LR circuit, true current is (E/R)[1 − exp(−tR/L)].

Learning outcome: Fit the supplied trace under two different gain assumptions and show why both match. Retain an independent LC calculation and explicitly audit the known-capacitor, clock and unchanged-inductor premises. Submit a critique/revision pair and an unfamiliar changed response in the versioned course project, distinguishing generated evidence from real observation.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

True L = 2 H, R = 3 ohm, source 6 V and current gain 1.5 produce a reported asymptote of 3 A and tau = 2/3 s. Assuming unit gain gives apparent R = 2 ohm and L = 4/3 H, exactly fitting the reported trace. A separate known C = 2 F period of 4pi s recovers L = 2 H, then R = 3 ohm and gain 1.5.

Why does an exact LR current-trace fit fail to prove the sensor gain is one?

Discriminate a shared current-gain bias

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Synthetic LR experiment has source 6 V and current sensor gain 1.5. The normalized time constant is unaffected by gain. A separate ideal LC period uses the same linear inductor and an independently known 2 F capacitor. No actual measurement or physical switching is implied.

A biased model can fit the entire current trace exactly; an independent constitutive and timing record tests the hidden calibration assumption.

The LR trace determines L/R and gE/R, not L, R and gain separately. Assuming gain one rescales L and R by the same factor, preserving every point in the trace. An independent known-C LC period yields L, then the LR time constant yields R and the amplitude yields gain. If the capacitor or clock shares an unknown bias, this claimed independence must be reconsidered.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

A complete trace can hide a shared bias

For an initially zero-current LR circuit, true current is (E/R)[1 − exp(−tR/L)]. Suppose the sensor reports g times that current. The reported asymptote is gE/R, while the normalized time constant remains L/R. An analyst who assumes unit gain infers Rapp = R/g and Lapp = L/g. Their predicted trace agrees at every time, not only at two endpoints. A small residual is therefore insufficient to establish calibration or uniquely identify the physical parameters.

Add a genuinely different relation

A separate ideal LC period using the same fixed linear inductor and an independently known capacitance C satisfies T = 2pi sqrt(LC). It yields L = [T/(2pi)]²/C. Combining this with the LR time constant yields R = L/tau, and then gain g = Ireported R/E. This is a cross-model consistency test, not a claim that independent equations automatically constitute independent experiments.

Audit the independence premise

If the capacitance value is inferred from the same biased sensor, or if both time records share an unknown clock-scale error, the added relation may not break the intended ambiguity. If the inductor’s core or temperature changes between records, the same-L premise also fails. State what is independently known and which changed observation could falsify the shared-component assumption. The widget supplies synthetic truth; it cannot certify a real calibration.

Build the full-course dossier rather than a final arithmetic score

Your retained project now spans source inventory and field integrals, potential and work, conductor/capacitor boundaries, circuit topology and transients, magnetic-source symmetry, and induction/state evidence. Preserve prior drafts and public-answer exposure. In each category submit a prediction, representation, derivation, changed case, rejected shortcut and remaining evidence limit. A reviewer should see why a model was chosen, not just a screenshot of a matching number.

Separate authored scope from practical and learner completion

The available lessons and workspace do not prove that a learner completed them or performed a laboratory investigation. Current AP guidance requires at least 25 percent laboratory instructional time. If onsite access is prevented, qualifying virtual or simulation work may meet that condition, but science-educator supervision and retained student records remain necessary. AP authorization, college credit, secure assessment, actual practical participation and observed browser accessibility are separate gates. Do not invent measurements or reviewer approval to close them.

Worked original case

True L = 2 H, R = 3 ohm, source 6 V and current gain 1.5 produce a reported asymptote of 3 A and tau = 2/3 s. Assuming unit gain gives apparent R = 2 ohm and L = 4/3 H, exactly fitting the reported trace. A separate known C = 2 F period of 4pi s recovers L = 2 H, then R = 3 ohm and gain 1.5.

Investigation

Fit the supplied trace under two different gain assumptions and show why both match. Retain an independent LC calculation and explicitly audit the known-capacitor, clock and unchanged-inductor premises. Submit a critique/revision pair and an unfamiliar changed response in the versioned course project, distinguishing generated evidence from real observation.

Changed-case practice

Try a new practice case

A known 1 F capacitor and the same inductor have LC period 4pi s. The LR time constant is 2 s. What resistance in ohms follows?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the source integral, symmetry or charge boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original teaching checked 31 October 2026 against current official calculus framework and the relevant OpenStax discussion. No source exercises or diagrams are reproduced. All records and apparatus are virtual, supplied or generated; no real wiring, switching, magnetic braking or electrical measurement is requested. Public feedback and retained work do not establish independent mastery, supervised practical participation or AP authorization.

Practical and authorization boundaries checked against the current AP Course Audit requirements, including the conditional supervised virtual-work allowance.

Apply

Why does an exact LR current-trace fit fail to prove the sensor gain is one?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which orientation, initial state, symmetry or independent calibration assumption would change this induction inference?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
