Reconstruct current sum and difference from signed field components

Two long z-directed wires lie at x = −1 and +1 m.

Learning outcome: Predict both component signs for negative, zero and positive right current. Reconstruct the two currents from the component ledger without substituting their known inputs. Compare a magnitude-only alternative and propose a calibrated observation that genuinely distinguishes it.

Starting recap

Integrate magnetic sources, preserve cross-product direction and test the symmetry and calibration needed for a field inference.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With Il = 2 A, Ir = −2 A and y = 1 m, Bx = 0 and By = +0.4 microtesla. The inferred sum is zero and difference 4 A, recovering the two currents. Changing only Ir to +2 A rotates the resulting field while preserving this particular magnitude.

Open the experiment

Predict

Why can the field magnitude alone fail to identify the right-current sign in the supplied y = 1 m comparison?

Two signed components constrain source sum and difference; one magnitude loses that distinction.

For a z-directed wire, transverse field is mu0 I(−dy,dx)/(2pi r²). At the midpoint line, Bx measures the signed current sum and By the difference. The algebraic reconstruction assumes wire positions and component calibration are known. Changing electric fields can also generate magnetic fields in Maxwell’s extension; this static-current inference must not be applied indiscriminately to a dynamic source.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Write both source contributions

Two long z-directed wires lie at x = −1 and +1 m. At the midpoint line (0,y), the left current Il and right current Ir give Bx = −mu0 y(Il + Ir)/[2pi(1 + y²)] and By = mu0(Il − Ir)/[2pi(1 + y²)], using numerical metre coordinates. These signs follow the azimuthal right-hand field around each source, not a scalar sum of field magnitudes.

Invert independent component information

Define f = mu0/[2pi(1 + y²)]. Then current sum S = −Bx/(fy), difference D = By/f, and Il = (S + D)/2, Ir = (S − D)/2. The supported y range excludes zero so this chosen inverse does not divide by zero. At y = 0 the x component would not constrain the sum, illustrating a geometric identifiability limit.

Show why a magnitude can be ambiguous

At y = 1 m and Il = 2 A, Ir = +2 A gives B = (−0.4,0) microtesla, while Ir = −2 A gives B = (0,+0.4) microtesla. Both magnitudes are 0.4 microtesla. A magnitude-only probe cannot distinguish those two signed source hypotheses; an oriented component or a new observation location can.

Retain calibration and dynamics alternatives

The algebra assumes independently known wire positions, observer coordinates and component scale/sign calibration. A rotated sensor, gain error or omitted return current could mimic a source discrepancy. Additional same-calibration samples may improve a fit without resolving every shared bias. The static-wire inference also cannot exclude a magnetic contribution from changing electric fields without an appropriate time-dependent source account.

Worked original case

With Il = 2 A, Ir = −2 A and y = 1 m, Bx = 0 and By = +0.4 microtesla. The inferred sum is zero and difference 4 A, recovering the two currents. Changing only Ir to +2 A rotates the resulting field while preserving this particular magnitude.

Investigation

Predict both component signs for negative, zero and positive right current. Reconstruct the two currents from the component ledger without substituting their known inputs. Compare a magnitude-only alternative and propose a calibrated observation that genuinely distinguishes it.

Changed-case practice

Try a new practice case

At y = 1 m, measured Bx = −0.2 microtesla and By = +0.2 microtesla. With the known geometry, what is the reconstructed right current in amperes?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the source integral, symmetry or charge boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and model boundary

Original teaching checked 31 October 2026 against the current official framework, Unit 12. The displayed magnetic calculations use the stipulated introductory approximation mu0 = 4pi×10⁻⁷ SI, not a claim that this is exact in modern SI. All apparatus and records are virtual, supplied or generated. No real magnet handling, electrical current setup, particle apparatus or material operation is requested. Public feedback and retained reports are practice evidence, not independent mastery or performed laboratory time.

Supplemental primary teaching reference: Ampère’s law. The supplied cases, derivations and diagrams here are original; the source’s older exact-mu0 convention and classical spin language are not adopted literally.

Apply

Why can the field magnitude alone fail to identify the right-current sign in the supplied y = 1 m comparison?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which source geometry, material response or independent measurement assumption limits this magnetic inference?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
