SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Use an independent field to challenge a potential fit

Separate an exact fit from an identifiable, independently tested source claim.

Learning outcome: Vary gain and offset separately. Retain fitted charge, fitted offset and the independent field residual. Construct a same-instrument third-potential prediction and explain why it cannot by itself identify gain. Propose a controlled alternative test for a wrong source radius.

Starting recap

Keep source normalization, potential reference, signed energy and evidence independence explicit.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

With true Q = 2 nC, gain g = 1.05 and offset C = 1 V, the two-point potential fit returns Qfit = 2.10 nC and Cfit = 1 V. It predicts approximately 6.67292 N/C at z = 1 m, while the independent supplied field is 6.35516 N/C. The residual is approximately 0.317758 N/C.

Challenge a shared-gain potential inference

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Synthetic ring R = 1 m,Q = 2 nC. Indicated potentials at z = 1 and 2 m share gain and offset. A fit assumes correct gain and solves Q plus offset. Separate field record at z = 1 is stipulated independently calibrated; this is a conditional inference, not an actual calibration claim.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Two readings fit two unknowns exactly, even when an unmodeled common gain biases the inferred charge.

Subtract readings to remove offset, not gain: Qfit = gain times true Q. The fitted offset remains the supplied offset for this exact ring packet. A third reading from the same faulty instrument can remain consistent. An independently calibrated field record tests the charge inference only under the shared source-geometry assumption.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Write the measurement model

A known-radius ring has V(z) = kQ/sqrt(R² + z²). The synthetic instrument reports m(z) = gV(z) + C. A fit that silently fixes g = 1 while solving Q and C can absorb the true gain into Q. Two observations exactly fit two parameters, but exact interpolation is not evidence that the assumed gain is correct.

Eliminate offset, not gain

Subtracting the observations at z = 1 and 2 m removes C. It yields Qfit = gQ because the geometric factors are known. Substituting back gives the same offset C for this exact packet. A third observation from the same instrument follows the same biased model, so it need not reveal the gain error.

State what makes the new record independent

The stipulated separate field sensor has known calibration and observes Ez at z = 1 m. The potential-derived charge predicts g times the true field, revealing disagreement when g differs from one. This inference still depends on the shared ring geometry and static-source assumption. A geometric mismatch, time-varying source or correlated calibration could provide alternative explanations; actual independence must be justified, not declared by naming two instruments.

Worked original case

Changed-case practice

Try a new practice case

The true charge is 2 nC and common gain is 0.90. What charge does the unit-gain potential fit infer, in nC?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the source integral, symmetry or charge boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original teaching and cases checked 30 October 2026 against the current official framework, Unit 9 and OpenStax electric potential. All records are supplied or generated, not measured by a learner. No physical charging, battery connection, high-voltage equipment or particle experiment is requested. Retain predictions, derivations and critique in the course evidence workspace; public feedback is not independent mastery or performed laboratory time.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
