Check accessible motion before reporting a speed

Use signed charge and the energy boundary to reject impossible trajectories.

Learning outcome: Compare positive, zero and negative charge at fixed initial K. Predict the minimum candidate energy and accessible branch before plotting. Retain one ordinary turning point, one threshold case and one crossing case; state why their endpoint criteria differ.

Starting recap

Keep source normalization, potential reference, signed energy and evidence independence explicit.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For q = +e and K0 = 2 eV, xturn = 1 − sqrt(1/3) ≈ 0.422650 m. For q = +e and K0 = 3 eV, the top is an asymptotic limit, not a finite-time crossing. For q = −e and K0 = 2 eV, K at x = 1 m is 5 eV.

A simple turning point bounds the initial forward branch.

K(x) = K0 − q[V(x)−V(0)], expressed in eV when q is in elementary-charge units. Negative candidate K marks an inaccessible location, not negative physical kinetic energy. At K0 = 3q/e with positive q, K is proportional to (x−1)² near the peak; the travel-time integral diverges logarithmically. That threshold diagnosis is optional enrichment beyond the core energy balance.

Derive before checking. Retain contrasting captures and explain one assumption that could fail; calculated evidence is not actual laboratory work.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Choose the conserved account

For a fixed electrostatic source and a point-model body with no other work, K + qV is conserved. Therefore K(x) = K0 − q[V(x) − V(0)]. In the simulator K is in eV and charge is in elementary-charge units, so the product of the numerical charge and potential in volts gives an energy in eV. A negative candidate K does not represent negative kinetic energy; it excludes that location from the chosen motion.

Separate a turning point from an endpoint

The supplied potential V = 3(2x − x²) V on numerical x in 0..2 m has a maximum of 3 V at x = 1 m. For positive charge, K0 below the barrier gives a turning point before the maximum. Solving K = 0 selects xturn = 1 − sqrt[1 − K0/(3q/e)] for the initial forward branch. The other algebraic root lies across a forbidden region and cannot be reached by this classical initial condition.

Optional threshold-time enrichment

At exact positive-charge barrier energy, K is proportional to (x − 1)² near the top. Since speed is proportional to sqrt(K), travel time contains integral dx/|x − 1| and diverges. Thus nonnegative K everywhere is not alone sufficient to certify finite-time crossing of this exact threshold. This logarithmic diagnosis supplements the core energy balance; no quantum tunneling or real species behavior is modeled.

Reverse charge, not the potential

A negative charge moves toward lower potential energy when V increases. In this packet its candidate K grows toward the potential maximum, so the same positive potential hill is not an energy barrier for that charge. The hypothetical mass only converts K into speed after accessibility is established.

Worked original case

For q = +e and K0 = 2 eV, xturn = 1 − sqrt(1/3) ≈ 0.422650 m. For q = +e and K0 = 3 eV, the top is an asymptotic limit, not a finite-time crossing. For q = −e and K0 = 2 eV, K at x = 1 m is 5 eV.

Investigation

Compare positive, zero and negative charge at fixed initial K. Predict the minimum candidate energy and accessible branch before plotting. Retain one ordinary turning point, one threshold case and one crossing case; state why their endpoint criteria differ.

Changed-case practice

Try a new practice case

For q = −2e and K0 = 1 eV, what is K at the 3 V peak, in eV?

This public, unsaved check is not a secure assessment. Explain the source integral, symmetry or charge boundary in the retained course evidence workspace.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original teaching and cases checked 30 October 2026 against the current official framework, Unit 9 and OpenStax electric potential. All records are supplied or generated, not measured by a learner. No physical charging, battery connection, high-voltage equipment or particle experiment is requested. Retain predictions, derivations and critique in the course evidence workspace; public feedback is not independent mastery or performed laboratory time.

Apply

A calculation gives negative candidate kinetic energy beyond a positive-charge turning point. What is the correct interpretation?

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Which reference, source geometry or evidence-independence assumption limits your inference?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
