SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Challenge a force inventory with independent acceleration

Choose the recipient before adding forces. A force describes an interaction on that recipient, with a direction and an agent. Velocity describes motion; acceleration describes a change of velocity. A point moving east can have a northward acceleration, and a point moving west can have an eastward acceleration. The force diagram is not a sketch of its velocity arrows.

Learning outcome: Compare H=−4,0,4 N while holding F=6 N. Retain component residuals and propose one independent acceleration or force check. Explain why a residual of zero at one setting does not establish every instrument calibration.

Starting recap

Draw recipient-specific interactions, resolve signed components and identify the domain of each force/contact model before substituting.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At F=6 N and H=2 N, total force is (4,6) N with magnitude √52≈7.21110 N. Dividing by 2 kg gives (2,3) m/s². The listed forces alone would predict (2,2) m/s².

A vector mismatch challenges the force inventory, not Newton’s law by itself.

For the declared inertial frame and mass, missing force equals m a minus the sum of listed interactions. This identifies a required component, not its physical agent: acceleration calibration, mass error or an omitted interaction need independent tests. Neither force nor acceleration alone determines the current velocity.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Define the recipient and model

Choose the recipient before adding forces. A force describes an interaction on that recipient, with a direction and an agent. Velocity describes motion; acceleration describes a change of velocity. A point moving east can have a northward acceleration, and a point moving west can have an eastward acceleration. The force diagram is not a sketch of its velocity arrows.

Build the algebraic relationship

For an independently specified inertial frame and a constant 2 kg mass, the listed horizontal-plane forces are (F,0) N and (−2,4) N. Their sum is (F−2,4) N. If the supplied acceleration is (ax,ay), the force inventory predicts (2ax,2ay). Subtract the listed sum to obtain the missing force required under these premises. Components must be compared before magnitudes; equal magnitudes can hide different directions.

Check the changed state

The synthetic generator adds an unlisted force (0,H) N. Thus ax=(F−2)/2 and ay=(4+H)/2. With F=6 and H=2, the listed resultant is (4,4) N but the supplied acceleration is (2,3) m/s². The missing component is (0,2) N. This reconstructs an algebraic discrepancy; it does not identify a magnetic, contact or gravitational agent by itself.

Interpret evidence and limits

An actual mismatch could also involve mass calibration, perspective, acceleration estimation or a noninertial frame. Propose an independent discriminating observation rather than declaring that a fitted missing force proves its own mechanism. The equal-scale vector graphic preserves component directions, while its values are supplied model evidence, not measured apparatus data.

Worked original packet

Bounded investigation

Changed-case numerical practice

Try the changed case before feedback

A 3 kg point has supplied acceleration (2,−1) m/s². Listed force is (4,−3) N. What missing eastward force component is required, in newtons?

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and boundaries

Original prose, data and diagrams checked 30 October 2026 against OpenStax College Physics 2e. This is an algebra-based virtual evidence exercise, not a physical experiment, equipment certification, transport recommendation or independent mastery result. Save assumptions and a competing explanation with the course evidence; supervised practical requirements remain external.

Apply

A point can have zero net force while:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why is an inferred missing component not yet an identified interaction?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
