Compare angular rates with radius-dependent point motion

A planar rigid body rotating about one fixed axis shares angular velocity and angular acceleration across its points. That does not mean every point has the same linear speed. At perpendicular radius r, speed magnitude is r|ω|, tangential acceleration is rα and inward acceleration magnitude is rω².

Learning outcome: Hold radius fixed while comparing ω=−2,0,+2, then double radius at one rate. Retain inward and tangential components separately and explain which direction changes with ω and which does not.

Starting recap

Declare the axis, angular units, recipient and valid contact or material branch. Distinguish supplied shape factors from independently measured inertia.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

For r=0.5 m,ω=2 rad/s andα=2 rad/s², velocity is(−0.5,0.866025) m/s. Acceleration is about(−2.23205,−0.133975) m/s², with magnitude√5. Doubling r doubles every linear component.

Shared angular rates do not make all rigid-body points share the same linear speed.

Use v=r omega tangentially, a_t=r alpha and a_in=r omega². The inward direction is toward the axis even when omega changes sign; tangential direction follows signed alpha. At omega=0 the instantaneous inward term vanishes but tangential acceleration can remain. These are kinematic components of acceleration, not extra physical forces.

Predict before inspecting the values. Save contrasting records with assumptions and one alternative explanation. This virtual display does not certify practical measurement technique.

Understand

Choose the axis, reference or material model

A planar rigid body rotating about one fixed axis shares angular velocity and angular acceleration across its points. That does not mean every point has the same linear speed. At perpendicular radius r, speed magnitude is r|ω|, tangential acceleration is rα and inward acceleration magnitude is rω².

Build the algebraic relationship

The workbench evaluates a point at 30° counterclockwise from east, with angular acceleration+2 rad/s². Its radial position is(r cos30°,r sin30°). Velocity is perpendicular to that radius: (−ωr sin30°,ωr cos30°). Reversing ω reverses velocity but does not reverse the inward acceleration, which depends onω².

Check the original numerical packet

Acceleration combines inward and tangential components. In east–north coordinates it is(−rω²cos30°−rαsin30°,−rω²sin30°+rαcos30°). These perpendicular components give magnitude r√(ω⁴+α²). At r=0.5 m,ω=2, inward acceleration is 2 m/s² and tangential acceleration 1 m/s², giving√5 m/s² total.

Test the boundary and independent evidence

At an instantaneous stop, ω=0 removes the inward term but does not remove a nonzero tangential acceleration. A later speed change can therefore begin immediately. These quantities are kinematic requirements on the net force, not additional centrifugal or tangential interactions to insert into an inertial-frame force diagram. Each vector graphic uses equal component scales; velocity and acceleration are plotted separately because their units differ.

Worked original case

For r=0.5 m,ω=2 rad/s andα=2 rad/s², velocity is(−0.5,0.866025) m/s. Acceleration is about(−2.23205,−0.133975) m/s², with magnitude√5. Doubling r doubles every linear component.

Bounded investigation

Changed-case numerical practice

Try the changed case before feedback

A point at radius 0.75 m has angular speed 4 rad/s. Find its inward acceleration magnitude in m/s².

This practice is public and unsaved. A matching number does not verify understanding. Retain your explanation, assumptions and changed-case evidence in the separate course workspace.

Sources and limits

Original content checked 30 October 2026 against OpenStax College Physics 2e. All records are supplied or generated teaching evidence. No rotating equipment, applied loads, material tests or physical assembly is requested. An admissible virtual model state does not certify real equipment safety, supervised practical skill or independent mastery.

Apply

Reversing angular velocity while holding angular acceleration fixed changes:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why does zero instantaneous velocity not establish zero acceleration?

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
