SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Compare prevention, recovery and disposal boundaries

Close a waste ledger while explaining landfill, combustion, recycling and composting tradeoffs.

Learning outcome: Close a waste ledger while explaining landfill, combustion, recycling and composting tradeoffs.

Starting recap

Close a waste ledger while explaining landfill, combustion, recycling and composting tradeoffs.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Preventing 20% of 1000 leaves 800; recovering 60% sends 320 to disposal.

Open the experiment

Predict

Is a recovered fraction of generated waste the same as a fraction of the original baseline?

Experiment

Compare prevention 0 and 20 at recovery 60; then vary recovery. Identify additional process-yield data needed to claim actual recycled product.

Close a materials-management ledger

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Baseline 1000 kg/day. Prevention removes baseline generation; recovery acts on remaining generated material. All unrecovered material sent to disposal. Recovery collection does not certify recycling yield or lifecycle benefit.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Prevention and recovery have different denominators.

Collection, processing yield, contamination, markets and transport affect actual recycling. Landfill leachate/methane and incinerator air emissions/ash require separate controls.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Begin before waste is generated

Source prevention changes how much material becomes waste in the first place. Reuse can extend a product’s service life, while recycling processes collected material into feedstock for new products. Composting uses managed biological decomposition of suitable organic material. These actions are not interchangeable, and their benefits depend on the material, contamination, service delivered and displaced production.

Close the original ledger

Baseline generation is 1000 kg/day. Preventing 20% removes 200 from that baseline, leaving 800 actually generated. Recovery of 60% of the generated stream collects 480, leaving 320 for disposal. The 80% sum of the two percentages is not an 80% recovery rate: the denominators differ. Collected recovery is also not necessarily final recycled product; rejects and process losses require another ledger.

Compare disposal mechanisms

A modern sanitary landfill uses engineered barriers, leachate collection and monitoring to reduce release. Anaerobic decomposition of organic waste can generate methane, which may be collected but not necessarily captured completely. Limited land, long-term management and leachate remain considerations. An open dump lacks the same controlled design and is not synonymous with a sanitary landfill.

Combustion can reduce volume and recover energy, but it produces gases, particles and ash requiring controls and management. Volume reduction does not imply that material or toxicity simply disappears. Recycling may reduce virgin extraction, yet sorting, transport, contamination and energy needs matter. Composting can return organic matter to soils but does not make hazardous contamination harmless; odor and attraction of rodents can become problems when the system is poorly managed.

A closed landfill may be capped and restored for compatible habitat or recreational uses under professional planning, but redevelopment does not end gas, settlement or leachate concerns. Collecting landfill gas for energy can reduce some releases while introducing capture-efficiency and combustion boundaries. These are different from simply burning mixed waste in the open, which is not an acceptable instructional activity.

Preserve the special-waste boundary

Electronic waste can contain recoverable materials alongside hazardous constituents such as lead and mercury; informal dismantling or burning can create exposures. Hazardous waste cannot be classified solely by whether a household item looks ordinary. The lesson provides no disposal instruction for a real substance or local legal rule. Proper streams require verified material identification and authorized systems.

Transfer and feedback

A changed plan prevents 10% of 1200 kg/day and collects 50% of the remainder. Generation is 1080, collection 540 and disposal 540. If processing yields 80% usable feedstock from collection, final recycled product is 432 and 108 becomes processing residue. State whether that residue joins disposal before declaring the total disposal load. No waste sorting, burning or chemical handling is requested.

Identify barriers and distinguish water streams

Solid discarded material originates in homes, farms, businesses and industry. A sanitary landfill’s bottom liner limits seepage; a leachate collection system collects water that has contacted waste; stormwater drainage routes outside runoff; a cap limits infiltration; gas collection addresses produced gases. These systems reduce particular pathways rather than guarantee zero release. Waste composition, moisture, temperature and microbial conditions affect decomposition. A dry, cold waste cell need not decompose at the rate of a warm, moist one with the same initial mass.

For an original water account, suppose 100 supplied water units reach a site: 70 remain uncontaminated runoff and 30 contact the waste. A proposal captures 80% of the contact water, giving 24 units of collected leachate and 6 uncollected. Capturing 80% of the total 100 instead would misclassify the streams. If a changed cap reduces contact water to 10 at the same collection fraction, the uncollected amount becomes 2. These are invented boundary accounts, not engineering performance claims.

Evaluate displaced problems rather than invisible waste

Illegally dumped tires can retain standing water suitable for mosquito breeding; the presence of water alone does not prove an infected vector or disease outbreak. Marine debris can entangle wildlife or be swallowed, blocking or displacing food. Ocean garbage patches are dispersed accumulations across water and depth, not solid islands that could simply be lifted away. NOAA’s explanation, checked 31 October 2026, supports this spatial distinction. A clear-looking surface therefore does not prove that smaller or submerged debris is absent.

Capturing and burning landfill methane for energy does not itself remove the buried solid mass: decomposition and settling change that stock, while gas capture changes its exit pathway and subsequent conversion. If a supplied buried stock loses 20 mass units as gas and 5 in leachate, it declines by 25 whether 10 or 18 of the gas units are captured downstream. Changing capture can change emissions and energy recovery without changing this stipulated stock loss. Captured gas can be burned to drive a turbine or engine coupled to an electrical generator: chemical energy becomes mechanical work and then electricity, with heat losses. At a stipulated 4 energy units per captured mass unit and 25% electric conversion, capture of 10 gives 10 electric units while capture of 18 gives 18. That changed electricity output still does not change the separately stipulated 25-unit buried-stock loss. Real capture changes can interact with operation, so this is a fixed-process comparison, not an instruction. Reusing electronic devices and recycling in controlled systems can reduce discarded devices and virgin-resource demand; the hazardous-content and processing-energy boundaries remain.

Sources and evidence boundary

Apply

Baseline 1000 kg/day, prevention 20%, recovery 60% of generated waste leaves disposal:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Reconstruct the stated comparison with units; identify the boundary, a competing explanation and evidence that would challenge the inference.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
