SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Revise a cross-system recommendation without losing its history

Retain an original plan, mixed evidence and a reviewer-driven revision with a changed boundary.

Learning outcome: Retain an original plan, mixed evidence and a reviewer-driven revision with a changed boundary.

Starting recap

Use balances, causal comparisons, environmental mechanisms and explicit evidence limits from all nine topic categories.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At 100 MWh/year and 0.4 t CO₂/MWh, operational emissions are 40 and declared total 50 t/year versus reference 60.

Open the experiment

Predict

Does a lower operational footprint guarantee a lower declared lifecycle footprint?

Experiment

Compare 125 MWh/year at intensities 0.3 and 0.5. Preserve equal-service assumptions, rank the alternatives under both boundaries and identify which policy question needs separate evidence.

Compare a changed service boundary

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original reference demand 150 MWh/year at 0.4 t CO₂/MWh. Alternative uses selected demand and grid intensity plus assigned 10 t CO₂/year of other lifecycle emissions. Reference other emissions assigned zero. Fixed equal service is a hypothesis, not a verified fact; no financial or legal advice.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A narrower boundary can reverse an apparent advantage.

Compare equivalent delivered service, time horizon, upstream impacts and affected communities before recommending a proposal. These stipulated emissions do not establish compliance, cost effectiveness, biodiversity benefit or personal health risk.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Preserve the decision, not only the final answer

A complete environmental recommendation explains the proposed action, the service it provides, causal mechanisms, alternatives, numerical boundaries, uncertainty and affected communities. It also keeps the original plan, public-feedback exposure and the reason a later revision changed. A polished final paragraph without that history cannot show independent reasoning.

On the course overview, submit the course-specific original-plan tasks before consulting their public solutions. Complete the staged watershed project, retain its first report, obtain a human critique, and use the one-revision workflow. Then request an unfamiliar assignment from a reviewer. A renamed public example is not genuinely unfamiliar, and a self-declared status is not external verification.

Compare equivalent services and wider boundaries

The reference supplies a stipulated service using 150 MWh/year at 0.4 tonnes CO₂/MWh: 60 tonnes/year. An alternative uses 100 MWh/year at the same intensity, producing 40 operational tonnes, plus an assigned 10 tonnes/year of other lifecycle emissions. Its declared total is 50, so the operational reduction is 20 but the declared-total reduction only 10 tonnes/year.

At 125 MWh/year and 0.4 tonnes/MWh, operational emissions are 50 and declared total 60: the wider comparison is a tie. At intensity 0.5, total is 72.5, exceeding the reference by 12.5. The model does not establish equal delivered service, costs, reliability, habitat effects or actual lifecycle factors. Verify those assumptions before selecting an alternative. A change in accounting boundary is not itself a physical emissions reduction.

Match a policy family to the problem

The following are broad United States policy distinctions, not advice about a particular facility or current permit requirements. A surface-water discharge question points toward the Clean Water Act; public drinking-water quality points toward the Safe Drinking Water Act. Ongoing hazardous-waste management raises Resource Conservation and Recovery Act questions, while contaminated-site cleanup and releases may involve CERCLA. Air emissions require a separate Clean Air Act analysis. One law’s relevance does not imply that other laws are irrelevant or that a numerical classroom result establishes compliance.

International and conservation tools address other boundaries. The Montreal Protocol concerns ozone-depleting substances; a replacement may still require climate-impact evaluation. CITES regulates international trade in listed species, not every cause of habitat loss. Endangered-species protection, protected areas, connectivity and habitat restoration address different mechanisms and can require multiple coordinated approaches. Laws and treaty implementation must be checked with current authoritative sources for a real decision.

Original policy transfer. A fictional proposal includes an outfall, treated tap water, ongoing solvent waste and a legacy contaminated parcel. Assign each question a relevant policy family and the missing evidence. Feedback: discharge pathway/receiving water, finished drinking-water measurements, waste identity/management history, and site/release history distinguish the four questions. Neither the emissions ledger nor a nutrient concentration substitutes for this evidence. Do not infer a legal violation or approval from these abbreviated facts.

Compare the remaining required policy mechanisms

The Kyoto Protocol established binding greenhouse-gas targets for specified industrialized-country parties over commitment periods. Its accounting and reporting mechanisms differ from the Montreal Protocol approach to ozone-depleting substances. Neither should be described as a universal present-day limit imposed identically on every country; this course does not infer current participation or compliance from a classroom inventory.

The Endangered Species Act provides a United States framework for protecting listed species and supporting recovery, including attention to habitat and prohibited activities. CITES focuses on international trade in listed species. A protected population can still face habitat fragmentation, invasive species or climate stress; trade controls alone do not remove those drivers.

The Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act addresses approval of food and color additives found to induce cancer in humans or animals under the relevant statutory provisions. This hazard-based legal trigger is not a quantitative estimate of an individual’s exposure or cancer probability. Do not generalize it to every contaminant or all pesticide residues: the Food Quality Protection Act changed the pesticide-residue framework. Regulatory categories and current legal details matter.

Original mechanism transfer. Compare a listed animal sold across a national border, habitat damage to a listed United States species, an ozone-depleting refrigerant, an agreed national greenhouse-gas target and a carcinogenic food additive. Match the policy mechanism and identify one limitation. Feedback: CITES trade, Endangered Species Act protection/recovery, Montreal ozone-substance controls, Kyoto commitment-period accounting, and Delaney additive approval are different questions. A single emissions calculation or concentration ratio cannot decide all five. Explain the causal pathway each tool targets before evaluating its success.

Build a complete course defense

Choose a watershed intervention and connect ecosystem productivity and nutrient cycling; biodiversity and population response; soils, runoff and land use; energy service and emissions; pollutant transport and exposure; and climate or habitat change. Not every mechanism must dominate the decision, but every excluded major pathway needs a reason. Quantify at least three compatible balances, evaluate a competing causal explanation, and explain one distributional tradeoff rather than collapse unlike quantities into an arbitrary total score.

Retain a changed-case prediction before revealing its outcome. A reviewer should test units, assumptions, the strongest alternative explanation and transfer to a new boundary. Mark a simulation as a simulation. Completing all authored pages does not verify the required supervised inquiry/fieldwork time, institutional AP authorization or independent mastery.

Changed-case feedback

A proposal claims 25 tonnes/year avoided emissions from operation. Its additional declared lifecycle allocation is 30 tonnes/year, with identical reference treatment and equal service assumed. On that boundary it increases emissions by 5 tonnes/year. This does not prove it is worse on every environmental or social outcome; it invalidates the specific claim of a net reduction on the declared emissions boundary. State what additional evidence would justify a revised recommendation.

Sources and evidence boundary

Original instructional comparisons; checked 30 October 2026: EPA summaries of the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA and Clean Air Act; CITES purpose; AP course audit requirements. No operational environmental intervention or legal determination is requested.

Additional primary sources checked 30 October 2026: UNFCCC Kyoto overview, FDA food-chemical safety framework, FDA legislative history, and FWS endangered-species program.

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Identify a changed-case result that would reverse your recommendation. Retain the first response and explain the revision rather than overwrite it.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
