Distinguish persistence, bioaccumulation and biomagnification

Track environmental residue and trophic concentrations as separate quantities.

Learning outcome: Track environmental residue and trophic concentrations as separate quantities.

Track environmental residue and trophic concentrations as separate quantities.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

80 mg after 2 half-lives leaves 20 mg; prey 0.2 mg/kg at ratio 3 gives predator 0.6 mg/kg.

Predict

Does every persistent substance necessarily biomagnify?

Experiment

Change elapsed half-lives at fixed trophic ratio, then change ratio at fixed time. Explain why concentration is not total organism pollutant mass.

Distinguish persistence and trophic concentration

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Initial environmental residue 80 mg declines by repeated halving. Separate supplied prey concentration 0.2 mg/kg and assigned predator/prey ratio. No claim that persistence guarantees magnification or that total mass increases.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Persistence over time and concentration differences across trophic levels are distinct.

Bioaccumulation occurs within an organism; biomagnification compares trophic concentrations. Metabolism, excretion, growth, tissue basis and food-web exposure influence both.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Separate three questions

Persistence describes how long a substance remains in an environment under specified conditions. Bioaccumulation concerns uptake exceeding elimination within an organism over time. Biomagnification compares increasing concentrations across trophic levels. They can be related, but none is a definition of the others. A persistent substance need not have the uptake, retention and food-web behavior required for magnification.

Follow a residue pool

The original environmental pool begins at 80 mg and halves after each supplied half-life. After two half-lives 20 mg remains; after three 10 mg. The removed amount means material has left this specified residue pool through the assumed transformation or loss, not that every product is harmless or every atom has vanished. Half-life depends on substance and conditions; the control counts half-lives rather than assigning a real chemical’s duration.

Compare concentrations, not imagined new mass

A separate supplied prey concentration is 0.2 mg/kg. An assigned predator/prey ratio 3 gives 0.6 mg/kg predator tissue on a common tissue basis. The predator obtains material through food and other pathways; concentration increase does not create pollutant mass. Total burden also depends on organism mass, tissue distribution and sampling basis. Comparing wet-weight tissue with dry-weight tissue can mislead.

Explain transport and vulnerability

Some persistent organic pollutants travel far from their release and can enter food webs. Fat solubility, metabolism, excretion, growth and diet influence accumulation. Examples such as DDT-related compounds and PCBs illustrate persistent organic contaminants; mercury is an element rather than an organic pollutant, although methylmercury is an important food-web contaminant. Do not treat every substance as having the same kinetics or health effects.

Connect concentration evidence to specific effects

DDE, a persistent breakdown product associated with DDT use, can cause eggshell thinning in susceptible bird species, increasing breakage and reducing reproductive success. Species differ in sensitivity. Methylmercury can damage nervous-system function, with developing nervous systems particularly vulnerable. PCB mixtures have been associated with reproductive and developmental effects in animal studies, with effects depending on mixture, exposure and species. These are different endpoints, not one generic consequence of a high trophic concentration.

A fictional food web has predator/prey concentration ratio3 but no reproductive observations. Does that prove eggshell thinning? No: the ratio supports a concentration contrast, not a measured biological effect. To evaluate that mechanism, compare chemical identity and exposure with shell thickness, reproductive outcomes and alternative stressors under an appropriate design. The model’s unnamed residue and tissue numbers cannot supply a personal safety threshold or food-consumption recommendation.

Transfer and feedback

A supplied residue begins at 120 mg and undergoes two half-lives, leaving 30 mg. Separate prey and predator measurements are 0.4 and 1.2 mg/kg, a ratio 3. Without organism masses, total burdens cannot be compared. If a predator sample doubles in mass while retaining the same concentration, its total measured burden doubles, not the concentration ratio.

Keep inference and safety separate

A real study needs comparable tissues, diet and age information, blanks, analytical recovery and uncertainty. One cross-sectional ratio does not identify an uptake mechanism or justify a food-consumption recommendation. Use supplied data only; do not collect contaminated organisms, dose animals or interpret these synthetic numbers as exposure guidance.

Explain chemical resistance and separate effect categories

Persistence depends on resistance to chemical, biological and light-driven transformation under the actual conditions. Being carbon-based or synthetic alone does not make a compound persistent. Wind and moving water can carry persistent residues before deposition far from the source. Lipid partitioning can favor retention, but toxicity still depends on chemical identity, dose, tissue and biological response, not merely fat solubility.

Consider fictional substances A and B, both synthetic carbon compounds: A loses half its parent pool in one supplied interval, B in ten. After ten intervals A retains 1/1024 of its initial parent pool whereas B retains one half. Their shared label therefore does not predict equal persistence. If light exposure changes A’s half-life, its environmental lifetime changes without changing the definition of an organic compound.

The framework groups reproductive, nervous and circulatory outcomes among possible human effects of accumulated contaminants. These are endpoint categories to investigate, not a claim that each of DDT, PCB mixtures and mercury causes every listed effect at any measured concentration. A tissue concentration series paired only with nerve-function records cannot establish a circulatory effect; that requires its own outcome and causal evidence. The previously described eggshell, developmental and nervous-system examples likewise retain chemical- and organism-specific boundaries.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
