Separate carbon storage from atmospheric exchange

Close a bounded carbon budget and avoid equating export with respiration.

Learning outcome: Close a bounded carbon budget and avoid equating export with respiration.

Starting recap

A stock has mass units; flux has mass per time units. Boundary choice determines what is an input.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Uptake 200, respiration 140, import 10 and export 25 produce+45 g C/m²/yr.

Open the experiment

Predict

Will reducing export change atmospheric exchange in this stipulated one-year model?

Experiment

At uptake 200 compare exports 0,25,100. Reconstruct stock change and atmospheric exchange separately. Then lower uptake 100 and identify what reverses.

Close an ecosystem carbon ledger

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · One-year synthetic ecosystem budget: initial carbon500; autotroph respiration80, decomposer respiration60, lateral import10, all in g C/m² or g C/m²/yr. No fossil or geologic reservoir included.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

The chosen ecosystem boundary accumulates carbon.

Export leaves this boundary but is not automatically atmospheric CO2. Carbon atoms cycle among reservoirs; energy is transferred and dissipated, not recycled by this ledger.

Understand

Identify the reservoir and the accounting interval

Carbon moves among organisms, soils, water, atmosphere and geologic reservoirs. Photosynthesis incorporates inorganic carbon into organic material; respiration returns carbon dioxide. Decomposition can transfer carbon to both organic soil material and gases, depending on conditions. Combustion oxidizes stored organic carbon. Dissolution and outgassing exchange carbon between air and water; burial, sedimentation and weathering connect much longer-time-scale reservoirs.

A reservoir is an amount, not a transfer rate. A large reservoir need not exchange quickly. The synthetic ledger here includes one ecosystem’s living and dead carbon over one year. It does not include every reservoir on Earth, and its assigned values are not contemporary global estimates.

Close the original budget

Start with 500 g C/m². Gross photosynthetic uptake is 200 g C/m²/yr. Autotroph respiration is 80 and heterotroph respiration 60 in the same flux units. Lateral import adds 10; disturbance export removes 25. The storage change is 200−80−60+10−25=45 g C/m² over the one-year interval. Final stock is 545 g C/m².

Atmospheric net exchange into this ecosystem is 200−80−60=60 g C/m²/yr under the stated processes. It differs from the 45-unit stock gain because lateral movement crosses a different part of the boundary. Exported wood, dissolved carbon or eroded material is not necessarily converted immediately to atmospheric CO₂.

Hold uptake fixed and increase export to 100. Stock change becomes −30, even though the modeled atmospheric net uptake remains +60. These simultaneous statements are consistent. A claim about a carbon sink must specify the boundary and fluxes being discussed.

Human perturbations and coupled reservoirs

Fossil-fuel combustion transfers carbon from long-stored geologic reservoirs into the active atmosphere-ocean-land system. Clearing vegetation can alter storage and uptake, but the timing and destinations depend on burning, decay, regrowth and use of removed material. Ocean absorption redistributes carbon; it does not destroy atoms. A one-year ecosystem ledger cannot by itself project a global climate response.

Carbon cycling also does not recycle useful energy. Photosynthesis captures energy in chemical forms, and respiration and other transformations dissipate energy as heat. Carbon atoms can be incorporated repeatedly while usable energy must be replenished. Keep the matter and energy diagrams separate even when their arrows describe related processes.

Transfer: test the claim before choosing an intervention

A manager reports that a site with more standing wood is necessarily removing more carbon from the atmosphere this year. Counter with a possible old, high-stock site whose current uptake balances respiration, compared with a lower-stock rapidly growing site. Neither example proves a specific real site’s behavior; it shows why both stock and flux evidence are required.

For uptake 100 and export 25, calculate a −55 g C/m² stock change and a final 445. Identify the measurements needed to test that prediction: compatible area and time boundaries, uptake and respiration estimates, and lateral flows. A solution proposal should state which flux it changes and monitor unintended changes elsewhere rather than treating any increase in one stock as a complete environmental benefit.

Apply

For uptake 200, respiration 140, import 10 and export 25, the initial 500 g C/m² stock ends at:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Use your contrasting captures to justify a claim with units, one limitation and a changed-case prediction. Close a bounded carbon budget and avoid equating export with respiration.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
