Explain ozone depletion and evaluate substitution tradeoffs

Track catalytic recycling while separating ozone protection from climate impacts.

Starting recap

Track catalytic recycling while separating ozone protection from climate impacts.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

Three cycles consume 3 O₃ and 3 O, form 6 O₂ and regenerateCl.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can one catalyst participate more than once without being consumed overall?

Experiment

Compare cycle counts 1 and 5 at initial ozone 10. Close oxygen atoms and catalyst inventory, then identify why this is not a full polar chemistry model.

Track a catalytic ozone-destruction ledger

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Ideal schematic Cl+O 3→ClO+O 2; ClO+O→Cl+O 2. Each cycle requires one supplied atomic O and destroys one O 3; atomic O supplied equal to cycle count, Cl 1 recycled. Not a full polar ozone-hole chemistry model or atmospheric rate.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

A regenerated catalyst can participate in repeated cycles.

This particular schematic has net O 3+O→2 O 2. Polar stratospheric chemistry also involves different cycles and activation on cloud particles; the ledger is not an operational ozone model.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Understand

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are an important example of long-lived chlorine-containing ozone-depleting substances; ultraviolet radiation can release reactive chlorine after they reach the stratosphere.

Separate two atmospheric roles

Stratospheric ozone absorbs much harmful ultraviolet radiation, helping protect living systems. Ground-level ozone is instead a pollutant that can damage respiratory tissues and vegetation. Depletion of the stratospheric layer can increase ultraviolet-B reaching the surface, with implications for skin cancer, cataracts and ecosystems. This ultraviolet pathway is distinct from the infrared greenhouse mechanism.

Ultraviolet energy can split O₂, and resulting oxygen atoms can combine with O₂ to form O₃; absorption and decomposition also remove ozone. A stratospheric abundance reflects these competing processes rather than an immutable shield.

Follow a catalytic sequence

Some long-lived chlorine- or bromine-containing substances survive transport toward the stratosphere, where ultraviolet radiation can release reactive halogens. In one schematic cycle, Cl+O₃→ClO+O₂ followed by ClO+O→Cl+O₂. Adding the steps cancels Cl and ClO, leaving O₃+O→2 O₂. Chlorine is regenerated and can participate again; it does not need to be consumed once for every ozone molecule removed.

Audit the original packet

Begin with ten ozone molecules and one chlorine catalyst, with enough separately supplied atomic oxygen for three cycles. Three ozone and three oxygen atoms are consumed, six O₂ form, seven O₃ remain and the catalyst is regenerated. Oxygen atoms balance: the consumed side has 3×3+3=12, matching 6×2. This is a symbolic ledger, not a concentration or atmospheric reaction rate.

Polar ozone loss involves additional cycles and activation on polar stratospheric cloud particles, with sunlight and seasonal conditions influencing the process. Our atomic-oxygen cycle alone does not simulate the Antarctic ozone hole. A mechanism drawing must not be mistaken for a complete prediction of its geographic size or recovery date.

Evaluate a policy and a substitute

The Montreal Protocol coordinates controls on ozone-depleting substances. Reducing new emissions does not instantly remove long-lived atmospheric stocks or refrigerants retained in equipment. Recovery, appropriate management and substitution address different sources. A substitute with little ozone-depletion potential can still have substantial climate impact; many HFCs illustrate why ozone protection and greenhouse accounting need separate criteria.

Transfer and feedback

A proposed replacement eliminates chlorine-driven depletion but has a stipulated high greenhouse metric and higher energy use. It solves one pathway, not every environmental problem. Compare leakage, energy service, lifetime and lifecycle effects before recommending it. No refrigerant release, appliance servicing or ultraviolet exposure is requested.

Separate cold-cloud activation from spring sunlight

Cold polar stratospheric cloud surfaces enable reactions that convert relatively inactive chlorine reservoirs into forms activated when sunlight returns. The isolated cold winter vortex and spring light together help explain Antarctic seasonality. Melting ice crystals alone is not a sufficient ozone-destruction mechanism; the halogen chemistry and sunlight must be accounted for. NASA’s polar ozone mechanism, checked 31 October 2026, supports this qualification of the abbreviated framework wording.

Predict whether identical chlorine inventories must cause identical loss in two hypothetical air parcels, one with cold-cloud processing and returning light, the other without that processing. Feedback: no; abundance alone omits activation conditions. In a changed case both have activation but only one has light, the timing of photochemistry differs. These conceptual comparisons do not turn the schematic three-cycle model into a polar atmospheric forecast.

Retained work is computational practice, not physical fieldwork or independent mastery.

Apply

After 3 supplied cycles from 10 O₃ molecules, remaining ozone is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Reconstruct a changed case, explain its causal mechanism and identify an omitted process or evidence that would challenge the inference.

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
