Evaluate ENSO evidence without a deterministic local forecast

Connect equatorial winds, upwelling and ocean anomalies while preserving uncertainty.

Learning outcome: Connect equatorial winds, upwelling and ocean anomalies while preserving uncertainty.

Starting recap

An anomaly is a difference from a stated reference, not a complete climate-phase diagnosis.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

A+1°C anomaly relative to 25°C gives 26°C; an assigned upwelling proxy 40 is 60 points below reference 100.

Open the experiment

Predict

Does one positive ocean-temperature anomaly guarantee a particular local rainfall outcome?

Experiment

Compare anomaly+1 and−1 at the same upwelling proxy; then vary upwelling at fixed anomaly. Explain why the controls are independent evidence scenarios, not a fitted coupling law.

Separate ocean anomalies from deterministic local weather

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Original paired-state evidence: reference SST 25°C; reference nutrient-supply proxy 100. Nutrient supply is proportional to an independently assigned upwelling index. No operational ENSO classification, forecast or actual current observations supplied.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Ocean temperature anomaly and upwelling evidence are related by mechanisms, not made identical by this control.

El Niño often involves weaker equatorial trades and reduced eastern upwelling; La Niña often strengthens that pattern in the other direction. Local rainfall impacts are probabilistic and regional. An anomaly alone without duration and atmospheric coupling is not an operational phase declaration.

Predict before changing a control. Save two contrasting captures and explain what is held fixed. Displayed digits are calculation precision, not experimental uncertainty.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

ENSO connects ocean and atmosphere

The El Niño–Southern Oscillation involves changes in tropical Pacific ocean temperatures, winds and atmospheric pressure. Under a typical reference circulation, equatorial trade winds help push warm surface water westward and support upwelling of colder, nutrient-rich water in the eastern Pacific. Ocean and atmosphere influence each other rather than acting as isolated systems.

El Niño conditions often involve weaker equatorial trades, warmer-than-reference central/eastern equatorial surface water and reduced eastern upwelling. La Niña often involves stronger trades and cooler conditions in that region. The exact pattern, timing and regional impacts vary. These broad mechanisms are not a claim about the phase occurring on the date you read this lesson.

An anomaly needs a reference

The synthetic packet assigns a reference sea-surface temperature of 25°C. A +1°C anomaly gives 26°C; a −1°C anomaly gives 24°C. An anomaly is a difference from a defined reference, not an absolute temperature or a percentage increase.

The upwelling control independently sets a nutrient-supply proxy, with reference index 100. A selected value of 40 is 60 index points below that reference. The model does not compute upwelling from sea-surface temperature. Independent controls let you test what evidence is missing before claiming a coupled mechanism.

Operational ENSO assessment uses specified regions, duration and atmospheric coupling, not one isolated warm reading. A warm measurement caused by a short local event cannot by itself establish a sustained large-scale phase. The widget deliberately does not implement an operational classifier or current forecast.

Link mechanism to a conditional ecological response

Reduced upwelling can lower nutrient supply to surface producers and affect food webs and fisheries. That pathway does not guarantee an identical response in every location: light, mixing, species, timing and other nutrient sources matter. Observed fish catches also depend on effort and management, not just ecological abundance.

ENSO can shift the likelihood of regional rainfall and temperature patterns through atmospheric circulation. A probabilistic teleconnection is not a promise of rain or drought at a particular address. Local weather and other climate variability remain relevant.

Transfer and evidence design

A fictional eastern-Pacific record shows a positive sea-surface anomaly and low producer growth. Propose measurements of winds, upwelling, nutrients, light and sampling effort that could test the proposed mechanism. An association between temperature and growth is not enough to identify nutrient limitation uniquely.

Compare the model’s +1°C/40-index case with −1°C/40-index: temperature changes but the assigned nutrient proxy does not. Then compare +1°C/40 with +1°C/80. Explain why these controlled comparisons reveal the need for a relationship model rather than proving that nature permits arbitrary independent combinations. No actual ocean observations or present ENSO declaration are generated.

Source scope and investigation boundary

Original teaching and synthetic calculations aligned with AP Environmental Science topics 4.9. Framework checked 30 October 2026: official topic map and Fall 2026 clarifications. Virtual captures do not establish measured field evidence, independent mastery or hands-on laboratory time.

Apply

A+1°C anomaly against a 25°C reference establishes:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Reconstruct your paired captures with units, identify a mechanism and test a changed case while naming one omitted process. Connect equatorial winds, upwelling and ocean anomalies while preserving uncertainty.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
