SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Distinguish sewage treatment targets and residual streams

Separate settling, biological processing, nutrient removal and disinfection.

Learning outcome: Separate settling, biological processing, nutrient removal and disinfection.

Starting recap

Separate settling, biological processing, nutrient removal and disinfection.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

200 kg/day demand with 30% then 80% remaining removal leaves 28 kg/day.

Open the experiment

Predict

Does lowering organic demand prove all nutrients or pathogens are removed?

Experiment

Compare primary 20 and 40% at secondary 80%, then change secondary performance. Keep the separate indicator reduction and sludge boundary explicit.

Separate organic removal and pathogen reduction

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Flow 1 millionL/day, original organic demand 200 mg/L. Sequential removal of same demand measure; disinfection separately stipulated 99% reduction of indicator count 10000/L. Indicator is not all pathogens, and organic removal is not nutrient removal.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Settling, microbial organic processing and disinfection address different properties.

Dedicated nutrient removal and sludge management are separate requirements. Indicator reduction is not proof of sterile, potable or compliant effluent.

Predict, change one control, and save contrasting captures. Reconstruct the balance with units; then explain a process the ledger deliberately leaves out. Display precision is not measurement precision.

Captures preserve recipes and replay their calculated results. They are synthetic model evidence, not physical measurements.

Understand

Follow multiple treatment goals

Preliminary screening and grit removal separate large objects and dense material. Primary settling removes settleable suspended matter. Secondary biological treatment uses microbial metabolism to process biodegradable organic material, followed by separation of biomass. Aeration can supply oxygen for aerobic microbial processing; it does not itself settle all solids or remove every dissolved chemical. Tertiary or advanced treatment can include dedicated nutrient-removal processes for nitrogen or phosphorus, with performance specific to the process. Disinfection targets susceptible microorganisms: chlorine and ozone act through chemical reactions that damage biological components, while ultraviolet radiation can damage microbial genetic material. These are different mechanisms with process-specific limitations, not interchangeable guarantees of complete removal. No dose, exposure setting or operating procedure is supplied; disinfection does not mean every dissolved chemical has been removed.

Convert concentration and flow to load

The fictional influent flow is 1 millionL/day with an organic oxygen-demand measure 200 mg/L. Multiplication gives 200 millionmg/day, or 200 kg O₂-equivalent/day. A 30% primary reduction leaves 140. Removing 80% of that remainder leaves 28, corresponding to 86% overall removal. The ledger tracks an oxygen-demand measure, not kilograms of one identifiable organic molecule.

Keep disinfection separate

A distinct supplied indicator count starts at 10000/L and is reduced 99%, leaving 100/L. The count does not become zero, and this indicator is not a complete catalog of pathogens. Disinfection performance depends on process and water properties; the lesson provides no chemical dose, operating setting or claim of potable water. A low organic-demand number cannot substitute for a microbial measurement.

Account for material diverted from water

Settled solids and microbial biomass become a sludge stream requiring further management. Nutrient recovery, digestion, dewatering and final use or disposal have their own constraints. Removing a substance from effluent may transfer it into solids rather than destroy it. Combined sewer overflows, capacity limits and variable inflow can alter real performance; a fixed sequential model does not represent every treatment plant.

Compare collection systems cautiously

Sewer networks transport wastewater to centralized treatment; septic systems rely on settling and further treatment in suitable soil conditions. Neither makes all contaminants disappear automatically. Site, maintenance and flow conditions matter, and groundwater protection is an essential boundary. No inspection, tank entry, sampling of raw sewage or maintenance task is requested.

Transfer and feedback

At 2 millionL/day and 150 mg/L, influent load is 300 kg/day. Primary 20% and secondary 90% of the remainder leave 24 kg/day, or 12 mg/L at unchanged flow. The 92% total demand removal still says nothing quantitative about dissolved nutrients or pathogen survival unless separate evidence is supplied.

Sources and evidence boundary

Apply

200 kg/day with 30% primary removal then 80% of remainder removed leaves:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Reconstruct the stated comparison with units; identify the boundary, a competing explanation and evidence that would challenge the inference.

Continue

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.

Science storage: loading. No account or remote computation is required.
