Water, charge and acid-family mass balance are satisfied by one positive hydrogen concentration.

Mass balance gives A−=C Ka/(Ka+h); insert it into h=Kw/h+A−. A dilute weak acid can have a larger dissociated fraction even while hydronium concentration falls. Acid strength is the equilibrium constant, not the analytical concentration, and an apparent square-root agreement does not independently verify activity coefficients.

These calculated packets are not performed chemical measurements. Keep feasible inventories, activity conventions, fitting observations and independent checks distinct.

Understand

Reduce the species equations without dropping charge

For neutral HA and conjugate A−, total concentration is C=HA+A−. Ideal Ka=h A−/HA gives A−=C Ka/(Ka+h). With no added salt, positive charge h equals OH+A−, and OH=Kw/h.

The resulting positive equation h=Kw/h+C Ka/(Ka+h) satisfies mass, charge and both equilibrium relations at once. The numerical model solves in logarithmic hydrogen concentration so a positive root is preserved over a wide range. It does not discard water or declare the square-root shortcut exact.

Compare approximations and meanings

For Ka10⁻⁵ and C=.010 M, h≈3.11267×10⁻⁴ M and pH≈3.5069. The familiar √(KaC) estimate is 3.16228×10⁻⁴ M, slightly high because it assumes HA remains equal to C. At greater dilution, water and depletion need renewed checking.

A smaller Ka means a weaker acid under fixed conventions, not necessarily a less acidic solution than every more dilute sample of a stronger acid. Likewise dilution can increase the fraction A−/C while lowering absolute h. These statements are compatible because the denominator changes.

Transfer and check

For Ka10⁻⁴ and C=.010 M, neglecting water only gives the exact acid quadratic root about 9.51249×10⁻⁴ M and pH3.0217. Compare its9.51% dissociation with the previous packet’s3.11%. Water is negligible at these concentrations, but the model retains it rather than relying on that conclusion in every later case.

Source and evidence boundary

Conceptual reference checked 30 October 2026: OpenStax Chemistry 2e. Prose, numerical packets and diagrams are original. All chemistry is fictional or supplied; no substance handling, mixing, titration apparatus or health interpretation is requested. The ideal concentration approximation, fixed temperature and inert-ion assumptions are explicit, not measured calibration. Retain your charge/mass balance, prediction, changed-case check and limits.

Apply

At fixed Ka, dilution of this weak acid generally makes its dissociated fraction:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

What omitted response assumption could make a precise concentration-based pH calculation disagree with a real observation?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
