Construct a standard free-energy comparison with explicit states

Standard reaction entropies come from a stoichiometric property ledger, not a visual disorder slogan.

Learning outcome: Construct products-minus-reactants entropy, vary temperature and enthalpy, and locate the conditional sign-change point while stating the omitted heat-capacity corrections.

Starting recap

Refresh state-function boundaries, absolute temperature, dimensionless logarithms, written reaction/electron equivalents, conserved charge and formal orbital/identity bookkeeping.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

For fictional A(g)+B(g)→C(g), standard entropies100,150,150 J/(mol K) give ΔrS°−100 J/(mol reaction K). At ΔrH°−30 kJ/mol and300 K, ΔrG° is zero.

Predict

Is the standard molar entropy of a stable element at ordinary temperature defined as zero just like its standard formation enthalpy?

Experiment

Construct products-minus-reactants entropy, vary temperature and enthalpy, and locate the conditional sign-change point while stating the omitted heat-capacity corrections.

Keep standard reaction ledgers and temperature assumptions explicit

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Fictional A(g)+B(g)→C(g), standard molar entropies100,150,150 J/(mol K), so ΔrS°=−100 J/(mol reaction K). Selected ΔrH° and this entropy are treated constant over the bounded temperature range; heat-capacity corrections omitted. ΔrG°=ΔrH°−TΔrS° is per written mole of reaction, not total finite conversion.

The constant-parameter standard reaction free energy is zero here.

Standard reaction entropy is products minus reactants with stoichiometric factors:150−100−150=−100 J/(mol K). Unlike standard formation enthalpies, standard molar entropies of stable elements at ordinary temperature are not set to zero. The linear temperature comparison assumes fixed reaction enthalpy and entropy; it is not a universal extrapolation across phases.

These calculated packets are not performed chemical measurements or separation procedures. Keep feasible inventories, activity conventions, fitting observations and independent checks distinct.

Understand

Assemble a consistent standard-state ledger

For the fictional written gas reaction A+B→C, supplied standard molar entropies are100,150 and150 J/(mol K). Products minus reactants gives ΔrS°=150−100−150=−100 J/(mol reaction K). Coefficients and phase labels matter; changing either changes the property combination.

Standard reaction enthalpy can similarly be computed from formation enthalpies. Stable elemental reference formation enthalpies are assigned zero by convention, but their standard molar entropies at ordinary temperature are not generally zero. The third-law zero refers to an ideal perfectly ordered crystal at absolute zero, with its stated conditions.

Compare temperature conditionally

Using ΔrH°−30 kJ/mol and constant ΔrS°−.100 kJ/(mol K), ΔrG°=−30+.100T. It is−5 kJ/mol at250 K, zero at300 K and+10 kJ/mol at400 K. This is a standard-state tendency under the fixed-property approximation, not a total energy yield for any finite starting mixture.

Real reaction enthalpy and entropy can vary with temperature through heat capacities and phase changes. The model bounds its comparison and does not extrapolate that straight line universally.

A separate formation-free-energy check

For a different explicitly supplied standard-state packet A+B→C, let formation Gibbs energies be −50, −20 and −90 kJ/mol respectively. Predict the reaction value before checking: −90−(−50)−(−20)=−20 kJ/mol of the written reaction. This separate packet is not the same thermodynamic data set as the temperature slider. Reversing the written reaction reverses that value, while doubling its coefficients doubles it.

Transfer and check

If ΔrH° is−25 kJ/mol with the same entropy, the conditional zero occurs at250 K. At350 K the standard free energy is+10 kJ/mol. Explain why a positive standard value does not by itself prove every actual mixture must react backward: its current activity quotient remains to be specified.

Apply

With ΔrH°−30 kJ/mol and ΔrS°−100 J/(mol K), ΔrG° at400 K is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why should reaction phase labels and the written stoichiometric scale remain attached to every molar property?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Skipping retains experiments and awards no mastery.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
