SCIENCE · INVESTIGATE AND EXPLAIN

Use the water constant instead of assuming neutral always means seven

Neutrality is a comparison of acid and base species under a declared activity convention.

Learning outcome: Compare three supplied pKw values at zero offset, then move one pH unit in each direction. Recover hydronium/hydroxide concentrations, product and ratio.

Starting recap

Refresh proton equivalents, conjugate pairs, logarithmic dimensionless activity, analytical amount/volume, mass and charge balances, and bounded observational criteria.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

At supplied pKw 12, neutral ideal pH is 6. A packet at pH7 is basic relative to that temperature condition.

Open the experiment

Predict

Can pH7 describe a basic packet when the water ion product differs from its familiar25°C value?

Experiment

Distinguish neutral concentration equality from a fixed pH

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Ideal aqueous activity approximation with c°=1 M and equal unit hydronium/hydroxide coefficients. Each pKw represents a stipulated temperature-dependent water constant, not a fitted temperature calibration. Neutral means equal hydronium and hydroxide amounts in this model; pH=−log10 activity.

Reset keeps your prediction, captures and practice history.

Hydronium and hydroxide concentrations match in this ideal neutral packet.

Neutral pH is pKw/2 for the stated ideal/equal-coefficient convention; it is not always7. Increasing pH by one changes hydronium activity by a factor of ten, not one molar unit. Actual pH uses activity and operational measurement conventions; no absolute single-ion activity measurement is claimed.

These calculated packets are not performed chemical measurements. Keep feasible inventories, activity conventions, fitting observations and independent checks distinct.

Understand

Normalize before taking a logarithm

Thermodynamic pH is minus the base-ten logarithm of hydronium activity, a dimensionless quantity. In the ideal concentration approximation used here, activity is h/c° with c°=1 M. It is not the logarithm of an arbitrary numerical concentration in any chosen unit.

Water autoionization gives aH aOH=Kw. Therefore pH+pOH=pKw for compatible activities. With unit coefficients, equal hydronium and hydroxide concentrations imply pH=pOH=pKw/2. The supplied pKw values represent different stipulated thermal conditions, not a numerical temperature calibration.

Separate neutral from familiar

At pKw 14, neutrality gives pH7. At pKw 12 it gives pH6. At that second condition, pH7 means hydronium10⁻⁷ M and hydroxide10⁻⁵ M: hydroxide exceeds hydronium, so the solution is basic relative to the appropriate neutrality point.

A one-unit pH increase divides hydronium activity by ten. It does not add a fixed molar concentration or prove a tenfold change in total weak-acid inventory. Activity conventions and analytical concentrations answer different questions.

Transfer and check

Choose pKw 13 and pH5.5. Then pOH7.5, h≈3.1623×10⁻⁶ M and OH≈3.1623×10⁻⁸ M under the ideal approximation. Their ratio is 100 and their product10⁻¹³. Explain why this packet is acidic even though its pH is below both6.5 and 7; only the former is the relevant neutrality reference here.

Source and evidence boundary

Conceptual reference checked 30 October 2026: OpenStax Chemistry 2e. Prose, numerical packets and diagrams are original. All chemistry is fictional or supplied; no substance handling, mixing, titration apparatus or health interpretation is requested. The ideal concentration approximation, fixed temperature and inert-ion assumptions are explicit, not measured calibration. Retain your charge/mass balance, prediction, changed-case check and limits.

Apply

For an ideal neutral packet with pKw 13, pH is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why does actual pH use an activity standard rather than an unnormalized unit-bearing concentration?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
