Test ideal and nonideal vapor-composition predictions

For an ideal binary liquid, each partial pressure is its liquid mole fraction times its pure-component vapor pressure at the same temperature.

Learning outcome: Compare xA=.3,.5,.7 at parameter0 and1. Record each partial pressure, total and vapor composition. Identify which changes are due to composition versus the supplied activity correction.

Partial pressures determine vapor composition; it is generally different from the liquid composition.

The solid curve is the selected supplied activity model and the dashed line is ideal Raoult behavior. Positive departures do not imply a new chemical species. This symmetric model is a bounded visualization; the pure-pressure ranking alone does not guarantee vapor enrichment for every nonideal composition. No fractionation apparatus or universal boiling diagram is implied.

Retain the species, standard state and ideal/nonideal assumptions with every number. This mathematical packet is not a solution-preparation procedure or evidence of observed laboratory technique.

Understand

Use a liquid composition to predict a vapor composition

For an ideal binary liquid, each partial pressure is its liquid mole fraction times its pure-component vapor pressure at the same temperature. The vapor fractions follow the partial pressures, not the liquid fractions directly. With pA=60 and pB=20 kPa and xA=.50, pA=30,pB=10,total40 and yA=.75.

Explain what separation would require

The vapor is A-enriched in that ideal example because A has the larger pure vapor pressure. Equilibrium vapor enrichment is the basis for a conceptual separation argument, but one equilibrium calculation is not a complete distillation design or proof that repeated separation can reach any purity. No heating or apparatus procedure is requested.

Challenge the ideal assumption with a supplied model

The original bounded illustration uses lnγA=Aparameter xB² and lnγB=Aparameter xA². Multiply each Raoult partial pressure by its own coefficient. At xA=.50 and parameter1, both are exp(.25), so total becomes40exp(.25)≈51.361 kPa while their ratio, and therefore yA=.75, stays unchanged. At asymmetric compositions the coefficients differ.

Keep model and material claims separate

This is the symmetric one-parameter Margules form supplied for comparison, not a fit to named liquids. The parameter range0..1.5 retains the stipulated single-liquid-phase regime. Positive pressure deviation does not identify a unique chemical species or interaction mechanism. Even ranking pure vapor pressures is insufficient to guarantee the same enrichment direction for every nonideal mixture.

Transfer and check

For the ideal model at xA=.25, predict pA=15,pB=15,total30 kPa and yA=.50. Compare that vapor enrichment with the equal-composition case. If an independent total-pressure observation is incompatible with30 kPa, inspect temperature, pure reference pressures, composition and nonideal behavior rather than declaring one cause from a single residual.

Sources and evidence boundary

Conceptual references checked 30 October 2026: Colligative properties, NIST Margules reference. All cases, prose and diagrams are original. Supplied and calculated data are not observed laboratory evidence. No chemical handling, heating, pressurized gas, membrane experiment or clinical application is requested. Retain predictions, contrasting recipes and a changed-case explanation; numerical agreement does not certify independent mastery.

Apply

For ideal xA=.50 with pure pressures60 and20 kPa, vapor A mole fraction is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Can a positive departure from Raoult behavior alone identify a unique microscopic interaction mechanism?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
