Infer concentration from blank-corrected equivalents

Separate endpoint volume, stoichiometric equivalents and acid formula-unit amount .

Learning outcome: Compare the same endpoint with different blanks, then vary endpoint at fixed blank. Reconstruct the bounded concentration extremes and identify the assumed neutralization step.

Starting recap

Review amount dimensions, chemical formulas and charge, signed differences, ratio bounds and the distinction between a theoretical constraint and measured conversion.

All lessons are open directly. Your saved experiments remain when you leave and return.

Try

A 20.0 mL endpoint minus.20 mL blank gives 19.8 mL; .100 M base supplies1.98 mmol equivalents, hence.99 mmol diprotic acid in10 mL, or.099 M.

Predict

Does one mole of base always equal one mole of acid formula units?

Correct a blank and count acid equivalents

Worked teaching model · synthetic values · Stipulated complete two-proton neutralization of one acid formula unit by monobasic strong base. Base0.100±0.001 mol/L; acid aliquot10.00±0.02 mL; endpoint bound±0.05 mL, blank bound±0.02 mL. Endpoint represents equivalence within the declared bound. No practical titration or unknown identity claim.

Subtract the blank before assigning stoichiometric equivalents.

Two base equivalents correspond to one acid formula unit only because complete two-proton neutralization was stipulated. A color endpoint or a nominal acid name does not establish that condition by itself. Bounds cover only the declared inputs, not unknown side reactions, incomplete proton neutralization or indicator bias.

Retain the reaction/measurement boundary with every number. This mathematical packet is not a chemical procedure or evidence of actual laboratory technique.

Understand

Define the reaction equivalent

The packet stipulates complete neutralization of two protons per acid formula unit by a monobasic strong base. Thus two moles of base correspond to one mole of acid formula units. A titration calculation must establish that stoichiometric relationship before assigning an acid concentration; a raw volume ratio does not supply it.

Remove the independently supplied blank

For measured endpoint20.0 mL and blank correction.20 mL, the analyte-associated volume is 19.8 mL. At .100 mol/L, that is 1.98 mmol base equivalents. Dividing by two gives .99 mmol acid formula units. In a 10.00 mL acid aliquot, the inferred concentration is .0990 mol/L. Forgetting the blank and forgetting the equivalent factor are different errors.

Construct a bounded inference

The base is .100±.001 M, aliquot10.00±.02 mL, endpoint bound±.05 mL and blank bound±.02 mL. Combining the volume-difference bounds conservatively gives corrected volume19.8±.07 mL. The lower concentration uses.099×19.73/(2×10.02); the upper uses.101×19.87/(2×9.98). Units cancel because both volumes use milliliters.

Do not confuse endpoint with chemical truth

The activity stipulates that the observed endpoint represents the declared equivalence within its bound. A real indicator change need not establish that every proton has been neutralized, and a different acid or side reaction can require a different reaction model. Bounds on instrument readings do not automatically include those chemical errors.

Transfer without overidentification

An endpoint can constrain acid equivalents under the supplied assumptions but cannot uniquely identify an unknown molecule. A new acid that transfers only one proton in the observed reaction would have a different formula-unit concentration for the same equivalent amount . State the reaction, blank model and distinction between equivalence and observation before claiming a precise number. This task supplies virtual evidence only and requests no acid/base handling.

Sources and evidence boundary

Conceptual sources checked 30 October 2026: Quantitative analysis and titration. All prose, cases, code and diagrams are original. The supplied models are not measured structures, a performed laboratory investigation or certification of independent mastery. No chemical handling, heating, pressure vessel or cryogenic experiment is requested. Retain predictions, contrasting evidence and a changed-case explanation.

A stipulated diprotic acid consumes2.0 mmol monobasic base at complete equivalence. Its formula-unit amount is:

Public practice checks a specific claim. It does not establish independent mastery.

Why does an indicator endpoint alone not establish complete two-proton neutralization?

Completion requires a saved prediction, at least one capture and a reflection. Presence checks do not grade your reasoning.

Save a science backup or import one

Science work is stored locally in this browser, separately from mathematics and AI. It does not sync automatically. Use this science-only backup; this checkout's older all-subject export does not include science.

A legacy file is available only when the complete snapshot fits the 36 MB limit. For larger snapshots, prepare a complete file set below; never discard notebooks to make a smaller file.

Matching imported notebook drafts replace their current drafts. Omitted lessons and known first attempts remain. Export your current work first if you want to retain both drafts.

Complete file sets and course backups

A file set can hold more work than one science file. Keep its manifest and every part together. Each file is limited to 36 MB. This format needs this version of LearnAI or a compatible newer version; older versions can use only the legacy single-file backup above.

The set includes every saved science course and global continuation at this moment. Later edits need a new export. A conflicting tab exports its own visible work, which may differ from saved work in another tab.

0 file(s) selected. File order and filenames do not determine identity. Missing, changed or conflicting parts block the entire restore; no good part is applied by itself.
